Don't be put off by the "Young Adults" designation--anyone who loves The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia or Harry Potter should read or listen to all three of these excellent books. I can't think of any books that I could recommend with more enthusiasm for a worthwhile excursion beyond the mundane.
OK, I've only listened to half of this audiobook so far--but only because I haven't found a good excuse to drive far enough to hear the rest yet. I enjoy hearing the author read his own work, and like the mystical aspects of the overlapping threads of plot that combine to make this a compelling book. I'll be looking for more good books by this author!
I would really like to have this book in an unabridged version. I have enjoyed both of the REAL unabridged titles by Neal Stephenson available through Audible.com, and to the extent that I have been able to follow the plot despite the jarring insertion of inadequate summaries of omitted material, I think that this would get top ratings from me if not for the "Exerpts" issue. I wasn't sure what "Unabridged Excepts" meant when I ordered it, and although I appreciate the lack of subjective cuts of text throughout I don't think that the book really works when whole chunks are cut out either.
Now I'll have to wait a year or two and either find an unabridged audio version or buy the book and read it. For now, a full read would be spoiled because I've got a fairly clear idea of the story and need to forget most of it.
From now on, no "Unabridged Excerpts" for me!
