"Magical and Wonderful"
My wife read this book first and fell in love with it. So, I gave it a try (even though it's not my favorite genre). It was love at first listen. I took a month to finish it because I didn't want it to end.
The author gives a simply amazing narration. He is among the top narrators I have ever heard. He perfectly captured each of the wonderful characters and instilled in them their unique personalities (as possibly only an author could do).
Summerland is filled with love and wisdom. And on top of that, it's an incredibly fun read.
My highest ratings.
"Not Great! Not Horrible!"
Yes. it is just more of the same old Brown stuff. The Da Vinci Code was fresh, exciting and deeply intriguing. This book is stale and felt very contrived.
Not really. I almost quit listening many times, especially in the first 2/3rds of the books.
Not heard this narrator before. He reminds me a little of Scott Brick, but does voice characterizations much better.
No.
I finally got pretty interested in the last 1/3 of the book. So, by the end, I kinda enjoyed it.
Faint praise at best.
"Awesome"
I am from Encinitas, CA which is Don Winslow country. I love mysteries and surfing so I decided to check it out. I fell for this book right from the beginning. I loved Boone and his friends. I loved Winslow's storytelling.
But this book totally surprised me. It turned from light and even a little funny to intense and dark. I simply could not put it down. I was so drawn to the characters and the plot action and wanted to find out what happened to Boone and friends.
BTW, the narrator was just great and and really added to the enjoyment. I am reading Frankie Machine right now, by Winslow, and am really enjoying it.
Don Winslow is my favorite new author. Check it out.
"What a great book"
If you loved Da Vinci Code and The Matrix you'll love this book. Well written. Well read. Can't wait till Book Two in this trilogy.
"Great book to take you away"
I loved this book and the characters of Jimmy's tale. Tender, funny and rich in Island wisdom. I became deeply immersed in this land and touched by the humanity of its characters. Tully, Cleopatra, Ix-nay and the others have become a part of me and the rat-race of modern life has faded to a more acceptable place.
Oh yeah. I have decided to take a Journey to the Islands this year to find my own Salty Piece of Land.
"Misguided and unbelievable"
I really wanted to like this book. I thought I might find that rare combination in a book of excitement and deep ideas. What I found was a totally unbelievable story with one stupid escape after another. I stuck around to hear more of Chrichton's ideas and see where he was going with this thing. Unfortunately, I just don't buy most of his ideas and the book got more and more preachy.
Over and over, he spouted his views that Global Warming doesn't exist. Then he stated as another example of public fear - the silicon breast implant controversy. He stated that the implant fears were proven to have no basis is fact. Finally I had enough. As a doctor who has treated the side effects of implants in a number of patients, I know they are far from benign for many women. Chrichton revealed his mainstream bias and ignorance on the subject.
Why in the world would I believe him on the subject of global warming?
I don't. Bottom line. this is a crappy book with unbeliveable ideas and plot line. Save yourself some money and time.
"Great book and narrator"
My wife and I really loved Maurice. I loved the characters and the narrator's multiple voices. This book constantly makes you laugh out loud. Really, really enjoyable. I still walk around playing my favorite characters.
"Outrageous and really funny"
Stoner humor, full of "sight gags", slap stick, chain of consciousness stuff. Of course, some jokes fall flat. But much of it is over-the-top funny. Listen to the sample - you'll get the idea.
I am looking forward to listening to the other editions.
"Totally worth the time"
I am only 10 hours into The Company. I am just so enthused about this book I wanted to encourage anyone thinking of reading this book but scared of the length to go for it.
This book is so well written and totally engrossing. The narrator is wonderful. It feels like you are a part of history.
