London, summer 1920. An unidentified body appears to have been run down by a motorcar and Ian Rutledge is leading the investigation to uncover what happened. While the signs point to murder, vital questions remain: Who is the victim? And where, exactly, was he killed? One small clue leads Rutledge to a firm built by two families, famous for producing and selling the world's best Madeira wine. Lewis French, the current head of the English enterprise, is missing. But is he the dead man? And does either his fiancée or his jilted former lover have anything to do with his disappearance - or possible death?

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I have read or listened to many books by this author. This one was just sub-standard. It couldn't be a 4 or 5.

Has Proof of Guilt turned you off from other books in this genre?

No. I really enjoy historical or period mysteries. I will continue to listen in the genre. But, I will be reluctant to listen to another book in this series.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Simon Prebble's narration is always terrific and it was in this performance. But, even great narration couldn't save the wandering plot and undeveloped characters.

What did you like best about The Currents of Space? What did you like least?

    The story was interesting.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Secondary characters could have been more developed.

What didn’t you like about Kevin T. Collins’s performance?

Narrator was trying much too hard. When he was reading description, he was quite a good narrator. Everytime he did voices, he went way too far.

Vicar Max Tudor, reveling in his new-found personal happiness with Awena Owen, feels that life at the moment holds no greater challenge than writing his Easter sermon. With Awena away, he looks forward to a dinner that includes newcomers to the village like West End dramatist Thaddeus Bottle and his downtrodden wife Melinda. But when one of the dinner guests is found dead in the pre-dawn hours, Max knows a poisonous atmosphere has once again enveloped his perfect village of Nether Monkslip.

What disappointed you about Pagan Spring?

I had read a good review of this novel. I am disappointed that the story was predictable, the characters were wooden types, the language was arch and there were numerous mistakes in the plotting.

What could G. M. Malliet have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

    Nothing.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator was over-reaching. He tried to do too many unusual voices instead of just reading.

What did you like best about A Bitter Truth? What did you like least?

I liked the narrator. The story just keeps wandering around never really capturing a strong plot or beliveable characters.

Would you ever listen to anything by Charles Todd again?

I've listened to many Charles Todd books before and always enjoyed them. I won't listen to any more in this series.

Have you listened to any of Rosalyn Landor’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Rosalyn Landor is a fine narrator and one of the reasons that I listened to this book.

This stand-alone work is widely regarded as Asimov's best science fiction novel. Andrew Harlan is an Eternal, a member of the elite of the future. One of the few who live in Eternity, a location outside of place and time, Harlan's job is to create carefully controlled and enacted Reality Changes. These Changes are small, exactingly calculated shifts in the course of history, made for the benefit of humankind. Though each Change has been made for the greater good, there are also always costs....

If you could sum up The End of Eternity in three words, what would they be?

    well written, thoughtful, provocative

What did you like best about this story?

I really enjoyed the rich ideas embedded in an interesting story.

What does Paul Boehmer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He reads expressively without intruding his voice into the story.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    changing the past

    Any additional comments?

Asimov is a terrific writer and this book written in the 50's has aged well.

  • Of Mice and Men

While the powerlessness of the laboring class is a recurring theme in Steinbeck’s work of the late 1930s, he narrowed his focus when composing Of Mice and Men (1937), creating an intimate portrait of two men facing a world marked by petty tyranny, misunderstanding, jealousy, and callousness. But though the scope is narrow, the theme is universal: a friendship and shared dream that make an individual’s existence meaningful.

Would you consider the audio edition of Of Mice and Men to be better than the print version?

I consider the audio version very different from print. The reading was closer to a play. The action of the story and the description of the characters are so vivid in the reading, everything just unfolds in my imagination.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    sad and powerful.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'd recommend this book to a friend who likes an exciting plot and an excellent narrator.

What other book might you compare The Thirty-Nine Steps to and why?

I don't read many thrillers but I heard about this old one on a recent trip to Scotland.

Have you listened to any of Robert Powell’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, never heard him before. Will look for him in the future.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! I found myself wanting to get back to my listening.

Sherlock Holmes is the greatest detective in literary history. For the first time since the death of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a new Holmes story has been sanctioned by his estate, whetting the appetites of fans everywhere. Information about the book will be revealed as deliberately as Holmes himself would unravel a knotty case, but bestselling novelist and Holmes expert Anthony Horowitz is sure to bring a compelling, atmospheric story to life.

I love Conan Doyle's Holmes and Watson. This was a very good pastiche. Holmes and Watson were well-drawn characters, based on the originals but with just enough of a twist of the new to make them interesting. Dereck Jacobi did a terrific job of reading. His voice really added to my enjoyment of the book.

Across Brattleboro, Vermont, rich people (some with dark secrets) are waking up in their high security, alarm-equipped homes to find a Post-it note stuck to their bedside tables reading, “You’re it.” There is little sign of disturbance anywhere, nothing stolen (that anyone admits) and only a bit of expensive food eaten as a signature. The press loves the story and dubs the burglar the Tag Man. But who is he? And what’s he actually doing?

Archer Mayor is an enjoyable writer and this was a good story, good characters, interesting plot. However, the narrator did voices so badly that it was really distracting and I almost stopped listening. He read the narrative very well. Someone should tell him that less is more doing voices.
