It's what he was raised to do. Most parents would hide or destroy any evidence so clearly demonstrating their child's failures, but-lucky for us-Greg Fitzsimmons's family has preserved each mistake in its original envelope like a trophy in a case, lest he ever forget where he came from.

  • An Anthropologist on Mars: Seven Paradoxical Tales

To these seven narratives of neurological disorder Dr. Sacks brings the same humanity, poetic observation, and infectious sense of wonder that are apparent in his bestsellers Awakenings and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. These men, women, and one extraordinary child emerge as brilliantly adaptive personalities, whose conditions have not so much debilitated them as ushered them into another reality.

Now I want to be a neurologist. Too bad my only qualifications are listening to Oliver Sacks' books... I would have been great!

  • 1919

With 1919, the second volume of his U.S.A. trilogy, John Dos Passos continues his "vigorous and sweeping panorama of 20th-century America" (Forum), lauded on publication of the first volume not only for its scope but also for its groundbreaking style. The novel opens to find America and the world at war, and Dos Passos's characters, many of whom we met in the first volume, are thrown into the snarl.

I found it difficult to keep going with this one. The interjection of innumerable headlines and bits of newsreel reports became tedious, and I really hated the narrator.

Performance artists Caleb and Camille Fang dedicated themselves to making great art. But when an artist's work lies in subverting normality, it can be difficult to raise well-adjusted children. Just ask Buster and Annie Fang. For as long as they can remember, they starred (unwillingly) in their parents' madcap pieces. But now that they are grown up, the chaos of their childhood has made it difficult to cope with life outside the fishbowl of their parents' strange world.

Memorable characters, plenty of surprises, and a great narrator. I would definitely listen to more books by this author and narrator.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

There's so much exposition and so little interaction between characters. Not up to his usual standards, and I almost decided not to finish it.

If you’ve listened to books by Kevin Hearne before, how does this one compare?

    Not as good

What about Luke Daniels’s performance did you like?

He does a great job. Great voice, and he doesn't sound like the usual baritone voice-over guy.

Do you think Hammered needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Only if he gets back to a better mix of FUN vs lectures...

Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, doesn’t care much for witches. Still, he’s about to make nice with the local coven by signing a mutually beneficial nonaggression treaty when suddenly the witch population in modern-day Tempe, Arizona, quadruples overnight. And the new girls are not just bad, they’re badasses with a dark history on the German side of World War II. With a fallen angel feasting on local high school students, a horde of Bacchants blowing in from Vegas, and a dangerously sexy Celtic goddess of fire vying for his attention, Atticus is having trouble scheduling the witch hunt.

Yes, it was fast and entertaining.

What other book might you compare Hexed to and why?

It's just as entertaining as his first book.

Which character – as performed by Luke Daniels – was your favorite?

    I love Oberon.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I like to stretch these things out.

A survey of the quirks and quandaries of the English language, focusing on our strange and wonderful grammar. Why do we say "I am reading a catalog" instead of "I read a catalog"? Why do we say "do" at all? Is the way we speak a reflection of our cultural values? Delving into these provocative topics and more, Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue distills hundreds of years of fascinating lore into one lively history.
