The content should be very interesting to me, but the narration sucked so bad that it became an instant snoozer for me every time I tried to listen.....
nothing new. If you are well read on WWII or frequently watch History or Military channels then most of this will be a refresher. Perhaps some new material on the conspiracy to kill Patton, but it was thin at best. If you are looking for a comprehensive biography on Patton....this is not it. If you want a high level overview of Patton's last few years and the readers digest version of the European theater, then this might do the trick.
Progressives will hate it because it relies on facts and actual history to blow up their image of a future American utopia....but hey, what else is new! Many excellent points are made in this book. Must read for those concerned with the direction of this nation and the folks leading our demise.
cheesy romance novels, you will love this book. Easy to follow shallow plot. Enough said.
Good historical documentation of the ATFs successful infiltration into the Mongol biker gang in California. I wonder if this wasn't the inspiration for "Sons of Anarchy" on FX. No doubt it was stressful for Mr. Queen, but some of the charges that they do end up filing seemed rather petty to me given all the hoopla-- minor weapons charges, etc hardly seem worth all of the effort and risk.....
For those of you who are interested in more of a laymen's approach to understanding relativity, this is a good audio. This is the first audio I have listened to by "The Great Courses". I didn't realize that it is nothing more than a college lecture that is being recorded, class by class. Not a big deal for me, but It may rub others the wrong way. Some of the in class demonstrations and white board examples are obviously difficult to follow.
A well told biography about Viet Nam, the experience, the real people and how they felt before, during and after the war. Many first hand accounts are documented by the author and those that he served with. Cranston's narration was superb.... one of the best I've heard.
The author does an excellent job of breaking down complex theological positions and framing them back up for the laymen—always using sound logic and reason. Many of the topics he decides to take on are many of the same things I have wrestled with throughout my adult life—how to reconcile them against scripture and my own inner beliefs, etc. I found his take on many of these to be consistent with what I have come to believe.
Excellent book. Fascinating story of one of the most important people of the 20th century. He was literally a “living legend” for most of his life. For those of you who like a well-crafted biographies and/or enjoy science or physics—this is a must read!
I had just finished Einstein’s biography and I thought I might follow up with a book about Isaac Newton. This is the book I chose. It was very well done, even for the scientific laymen. The book does have a Newton focus, but it also goes into many of his contemporaries which I found equally interesting. The book would be a helpful read for those entering a basic Physics class. It is really effective at taking what could be difficult subject matter and tying it out to real life examples that most should be able to follow and understand.
It will depend on what you already know about these seven gentlemen. The book is set up as basically seven mini biographies of seven of Metaxas' heroes. I had read a Chernow's biography on Washington and Metaxas' other book on Bonhoefffer, but knew little about the other figures. The book is intended to spark interest in each man leading you to read either more comprehensive biographies by other authors or read the works by the subjects themselves. Overall I thought it was well done and served the purpose that Metaxas set out to achieve. I would certainly recommend it to anybody who wants the "Readers Digest" version of these men's lives.
