I enjoy the historical fiction, but it is an awful lot about cathedrals! The book could have been edited down to 25 hours without compromising the story. I liked the reader though.
I enjoyed every minute of this book. The cast of characters is amazing. I had thought the media had covered everything there was to know about the candidates, and there wasn't more to know. But Heilemann and Halperin expose their human side, as well as that of their spouses and their campaign staffs. Fascinating! Engrossing! Sorry that I've finished the book - but I'm pretty sure that I'll listen to it again in another month or two and still learn new things.
Had read the reviews of Agassi's book, and found the autobiography exceeded my expectations. Though there are loads of descriptions of tennis matches, the focus seems to be on Andre as a person. He's a much more complex and likable fellow than we knew from news commentaries during his tennis career. And, at the end of the day, he seems to have good perspective on what it all means. And he's made so many contributions to his community. Admirable athlete!
Barbara Kingsolver reads this herself - Beautiful language. The book is hard to get into, so I put it down for a bit. Then returned a month later. That would never have happened with previous Kingsolver novels. I found the writer's technique of a book as a series of journal entries and letters off-putting, hard to follow and disjointed. I finally 'got into it' the last third of the book. The part I found least interesting (the time spent with Freida Kahlo) ended up being central to the end of the book. Worth persevering to the end, but not worth more than 3 stars.
Kept trying to get involved. Improbable premise, improbable characters, dumb story. Save your credits.
As one of the previous reviewers said, this book is well worth 2 book credits! A compelling story with wonderful narration. I'm sure this book is one I will listen to again!
I am a devoted Audible listener, but I have to say, I've struggled with Shadow Country. Usually I think of any excuse to take a walk or a drive in my car so that I can listen to my latest book. But I've been working on this one for more than a month - and I'm still finding myself getting lost in the multitude of characters and relationships, and not sure that I care about any of them! I think I am about to give it up after finishing only about 16 hours of the book. Shadow Country has been more of a cure for my insomnia than an entertaining listen. Perhaps, as one reviewer said, it might be more enjoyable if you had read the book first.
I'm glued to my iPod .. happy to do 3 weeks of ironing, just so I can continue listening. Wonderful writing, quirky characters, funny (and sad) situations. I feel like these characters have become my friends! What an interesting bunch. I don't normally think of myself as a reader of westerns, but this has been a gem. I'm sorry it is almost over.
I'm only listening to the end because I have invested 10+ hours in the book. Such a disappointment. I really enjoyed Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, and this does not, in any way, compare.
I often 'buy' an audiobook based on other's reviews. This one did not live up to the hype. I liked the narrators, but I couldn't really get engaged with the characters. I'm not sure why this is a best seller.
