From the Booker Prize-winning author of The Remains of the Day and When We Were Orphans, comes an unforgettable edge-of-your-seat mystery that is at once heartbreakingly tender and morally courageous about what it means to be human.

Christopher says: "Moving, haunting, but slow developing"
"Still not sure of the point of this book."
    Overall

I always find it funny how most books gets both rave and poor reviews. Most people really like this book and I don't know why. I bought it to read about English boarding schools (and the English culture), and didn't learn about either. The plot was unbelievable and unsettling.

Eldritch Swan is a dead man. Or at least that is what his nephew Stephen has always been told. Until one day Eldritch walks back into his life after 36 years in an Irish prison. He won’t reveal any of the details of his incarceration, insisting only that he is innocent of any crime. His return should be of interest to no-one.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I read this book while exercising (as I do most audible books), and it was a little difficult to follow. May have been due to the story being in 2 different periods of time.

Would you be willing to try another book from Robert Goddard? Why or why not?

    Probably I'd try one more.

Would you listen to another book narrated by David Rintoul?

    Yes.

Was Long Time Coming worth the listening time?

    No.

For much of her life, Anne Morrow, the shy daughter of the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, has stood in the shadows of those around her, including her millionaire father and vibrant older sister, who often steals the spotlight. Then Anne, a college senior with hidden literary aspirations, travels to Mexico City to spend Christmas with her family. There she meets Colonel Charles Lindbergh, fresh off his celebrated 1927 solo flight across the Atlantic. Enthralled by Charles’s assurance and fame, Anne is certain the celebrated aviator has scarcely noticed her. But she is wrong.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes and have. It's more of a women's book with a lot of details on emotion and feelings. I read one of the biographies of Charles a few years back and thought him a cad. My husband that he was just a wonderful, admirable man. This book totally justifies my feelings.

What other book might you compare The Aviator's Wife to and why?

    The paris wife.

Have you listened to any of Lorna Raver’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    Not sure.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    No.

    Any additional comments?

I thought the beginning slow and a little maudlin, but after a while it picked up and kept me fully interested.

Eddie Chapman was a charming criminal, a con man, and a philanderer. He was also one of the most remarkable double agents Britain has ever produced. Inside the traitor was a man of loyalty; inside the villain was a hero. The problem for Chapman, his spymasters, and his lovers was to know where one persona ended and the other began.

    Scott says: "Intrigue and True"

What made the experience of listening to Agent Zigzag the most enjoyable?

I usually listen to mysteries. I listen mainly while exercising or working around the house, so I need something that's "easy" to follow. This reads like a mystery. Fast paced and holds your interest.

What did you like best about this story?

    Learning more about WWII.

What about John Lee’s performance did you like?

    Strong reader.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

Anastasia Burke says: "Hillenbrand could make even laundry fascinating!"
    "excellent"
    Overall

I throughly enjoyed this book. It's a fast pace, page turner. I've read a lot about the horrors of WWII but it's usually about the Nazis and concentration camps. I didn't realize the Japanese camps were so brutal. But mainly this is a story about the human spirit and survival, brilliantly told and well read. I was afraid the book would be depressing but it's not.

An innocent man is about to be executed. Only a guilty man can save him. Travis Boyette is such a man. In 1998, in the small East Texas city of Sloan, he abducted, raped, and strangled a popular high-school cheerleader. He buried her body so that it would never be found, then watched in amazement as police and prosecutors arrested and convicted Donté Drumm, a local football star, and marched him off to death row.

Suzn F says: "I confess, I loved it!"
    "typical Grisham"
    Overall

A fun, quick read. Typical Grisham. A good book to exercise with, doesn't matter if you miss parts. The character, Travis, is not very believable.

From the former communications director for the White House and current political media strategist comes a suspenseful and smart novel about the first female president and all dramas and deceptions she faces both in politics and in love. Eighteen Acres, a description used by political insiders when referring to the White House complex, follows the first female President of the United States, Charlotte Kramer, and her staff as they take on dangerous threats.

Pam says: "I liked the second book better"
"Nothing good to say about it"
    Overall

I like the idea of a female president and thought I'd enjoy this book. However, the story line was trite and the characters poorly developed. I thought I was reading an abridged edition as the plot seemed to jump. Waste of time.

  • Aloha Quilt: An Elm Creek Quilts Novel

Best-selling author Jennifer Chiaverini has captivated fans around the world with her beloved Elm Creek Quilts novels, which have even spawned a line of fabrics inspired by the series. In this moving tale, Bonnie’s quilting shop goes out of business just as her divorce approaches. But Bonnie gets a chance to escape when her old friend Claire invites her to Hawaii to help launch a new quilter’s retreat at a charming bed and breakfast.

Wendy says: "Nice history of Hawaiin quilts too"
    "disappointing"
    Overall

This was my first Elm Creek series book and likely to be my last. I should have read more about the book before purchasing it. I love Hawaii and quilting and thought it would be fun and a change of pace from my usual reading.
If someone wants a maudlin, predictable, sophomoric tale, with romance and a happy ending, this is the book for you. It just wasn't for me.

USA Today best-selling and award-winning author Barbara Freethy writes wonderfully entertaining contemporary novels. Summer Secrets is the compelling story of three sisters and the burden of the terrible secret they share.

    Pauline Norton says: "riveting"
"predictable and all is right with the world"
    Overall

I downloaded this to try something different from my usual mysteries and biographies, and also I love the sea and sailing. I was very disappointed. I only finished it by playing it as background noise when I was working on my computer.

It started interesting enough with a "mystery" about what happened at sea and rapidly progressed to boring, not too graphic sex scenes with everyone falling in love with the perfect person and everything turning out perfect. Wish I could live in such a perfect world.

When Maximilian Ophuls is murdered outside his daughter's home by his Kashmiri Muslim driver, it appears to be a political killing. Ophuls is the former U.S. ambassador to India and America's leading figure in counter-terrorism. But there is much more to Ophuls and his assassin, a mysterious man calling himself "Shalimar the Clown", than meets the eye. One woman is at the center of their shared history, a history of betrayal and deception.

    Barry says: "Incredible"
    "Just couldn't get into it"
    Overall

I restarted this book 3 times and got "lost" each time. I usually listen while exercising and that may have distracted me but the story of Shalimar as a child was confusing and weird. I never finished the book. I wouldn't bother to download this.
