  • Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination

Seven years in the making and meticulously researched - Gabler is the first writer to be given complete access to the Disney archives - this is the full story of a man whose work left an ineradicable brand on our culture but whose life has largely been enshrouded in myth.

I felt like a fly on the wall as Walt and his artists created the likes of Mickey Mouse, and the first full length animated movie, "Snow White." He evolved w/the medium, pioneering in Television and continually reinventing his special vision of entertainment. My father took us to Disneyland at least once a year when he was a reporter for the L.A. Hearld Examiner. We were there and saw Walt at the opening of "It's a Small World." And I watched the Wonderful World of Disney every Sunday night. The extensive insight from this bio gives me a whole new appreciation for Walt Disney. It's been too long. I'm going to Disneyland! PS The first hour or three is a bit tedious because it traces the Disney Family back to Europe and also elaborates on Walt's childhood influences and why he gravitated to the field of animation, movies and entertainment. If you stick with it, just like Walt did, you won't be sorry!

  • David Copperfield

Of all Charles Dickens' novels, this is perhaps the most revealing, both of Dickens himself and of the society of his time. It is little wonder that Dickens said of it, "of all my books I like this the best; like many fond parents I have in my heart of hearts a favorite child. And his name is David Copperfield."

Fredrick Davidson, this books narrator, is phenomenal in his range of voices. Having just listened to Davidson tell the story of Robinson Crusoe, he was a familiar Englishman already to my ear. But his range really shines in David Copperfield. Uriah Heap for example is all the more clamy and despicable and disingenuously humble. David's stepfather, Mr. Murdstone and his sister, Miss Murdstone are that much more ruthless as Davidson injects the perfect voices for these two "spirit breakers." David's mother's name, Clara will always be associated with Davidson's Murdstone voices. Mr.Wilkins Micawber's voice was brilliantly portrayed too. Charles Dickens superbly captured the time period. It is a historians delight. Not to mention an eluminating look at various types of love, devotion, duty and steadfastness, of growing up and seeing life and people from different perspectives at various times in ones life. It is a love story that you can see coming and will cry in spite of.
