This book was a good story, but as other reviewers have stated the narrator is TERRIBLE!! If you can train yourself to ignore the poor narration and just hear the story its worth a credit. But I warn you now if you can't deal with very poor narration this book would be better off being a e book rather a audio book for you.
It took a couple of weeks of debate if I was going to get this book, when I finally did I found myself saying why did I ever wait. This book had me laughing aloud and even shedding a few tears with the emotion in the book. You will not regret getting it!
This book seemed like it might be a worthy listen at first, it had some new takes on zombies and life afterwards for survivors. It had action and even a little bit of sex not to far into the book, however from there it fell on its face crash and burn style. The author started killing off characters that he spent many chapters in the book as pivital characters in stupid ways. No heroic or even tragic ways, just stupid an example is as in all zombie type stories if you get bit you will turn into a zombie well in a getaway scene some one gets a scratch not a bite from a zombie just a every day normal scratch the person see's it after getting away from the zombies seeing the scratch and then blowing there own head off to not become a zombie from a scratch. Or another example would be a character is introduced in the 2nd part of the book that has lived in a world that is filled with zombies for 4 years, meaning that they know how to survive and suddenly forgets to shut the door to the warehouse he is staying in and zombies get in over night and he gets eaten in the morning because he is to fat to run from zombies that can not move faster than a slow walking speed. Forgetting to shut a door after 4 years?!? the only entrance or exit between him and zombies.... just flew outta his head. By the 3rd part of the book the author was killing off almost every character, and also made the main character the mailman look completely stupid, incompetent, reckless with other peoples lives, and for lack of a better phrase just a plain old ass. This character describes himself upto that point of the book as a person that you must look at life in a zombie world in a realistic way. You can't take chance always have a plan and a back up plan, 1 mistake and thats it game over. Then he knowingly introduces super zombies into the world, all because he can't do what he has been saying you must do to survive in a zombie filled world for the whole damn book. Also I have to mention that the author must hate women, he uses the angle that in a post zombie world and trying to survive and bringing new generations into a survivors community that women not only are willing to be used as incubators and they don't care who gets them pregnant but they also like it, they suddenly leave there spouses or boyfriends with a smile because they happen to be steril. Then go to a complete strangers room and say k baby lets get me pregnant so we get more people here in our community. All in the name of humanity surviving. Now I understand that there are women out there that actually like being pregnant and having babies, but there isn't a women alive that loves to be treated like a breeding horse. There is actually a line in the book where the main character is telling one of these women " I would love to have sex would you over and over, unless of course you get a bun in the oven. Then I would need to kick you to the curb." and she laughs it off and says "Yeah"
Rape is also common in this book, that however I can't say only happens in this zombie story, sadly its a common thing in many zombie stories because no one is left alive to stop the jerks that survive. But this author places it in his book like its just a way of life. That its a woman's place in life to spread her legs for any guy and like it.
Don't waste your credit on this, look for something else.
Kevin Hearne delivers again. Once started I couldn't stop until the book was finished. Along the way I laughed with KH's humor and felt a few tear jerking moments at the places appropriate in the book. Can't wait for the next book in the series. Please keep writing Kevin Hearne your stories are pure genius.
I loved listening to this entire series and can say that the author has a fun way of opening your imagination up to fun concepts even if they are a bit out there, the only negative thing about the entire series was at the very end you truly realize just how lonely an existence for Webmind would be with the way the author puts it, and I guess that also was his point he wanted to make so hence the books were all well written and hard to stop when started before finished.
I tried, I really tried giving this author and series the benefit of the doubt that some stories start slowly from book one but eventually get better. Oh I couldn't have been more wrong in this case. I first noticed this in book 2 and struggled my way through it by book 3 I couldn't even get half way through before I simply quit. Here is why, the book is based on space age trade and commerce, the author leads it to say that this is a profitable and successful way of life for those that trade goods. I honestly can't see how it would work, every port and I mean every port the main characters came to it was nothing but negative crap like, "I don't like the looks of you, you must be a pirate as a space official we are taking your goods your ship, even the underwear your wearing just because." or things like, well this other captain says your a dodgy person so you must be, do i know this other captain no, does he have a good rep erm well actually he has been known for fraud. But he says your not trustworthy even though you have never done anything on any record anywhere and even though your families trading business has the best record anywhere he said it so it must be true, so therefore hand over your cargo your ship and don't forget that underwear. These things were being ordered by space dock officials, not thieves not pirates, not even corrupt politicians. I just couldn't take it anymore of the mindset of well it was on TV so it must be true garbage. No facts, no investigations, no relevance. This went way beyond anything that was able to be believed, I would have had to look up with a telescope to even get to it was a bad joke.
My rating on this book would have been only 1 star, however I gave it 2 for the only reason that author had the ability to make you feel extremly sad. I assume this was something the author was going for as its a tragedy story. There is no warm fuzzies in this book, if you are looking for a feel good story click back on your browser and move on to something else.
I wanted to comment on the 2 main thoughts I had during the listening of this book. First I had constant thoughts that the author was in a dark place as everything was depressing ie parents dying and the after effect on they're kids or the opposite kids dying and the parents in the aftermath of surviving they're kids death.
My second thought was this story seems like someones messed up life. I'll expand on this, most books of the romance genre has the "oh only if that could really happen" feel or the "uh huh ya sure" cute but funny stuff that brings alot of readers. This story however really seemed like life in its most messed up depressing possibilities, if it could go wrong it did go wrong.
The only thing the author did really well was the ability to make you feel the pain of the characters, wish that expanded on the opposite side but failed although this wasn't to much of a big thing as there was only a few scenes in the book where anything good happens.
So if you like the whole tradegy story life this would be a good book otherwise I recommend you look for something else.
Wow, I can honestly say I am so disappointed. book 1 great awesome, book 2 kinda sad but still a great story. Book three comes along and WHAMMO! Talk about Greed on the part of the heroin. Up until the end of book three throughout all of the series its been "True Love" between the hero and heroin Soulmates if you will, and suddenly from out of no where she is in the arms of friend kissing him never wanting him to stop. She suddenly switchs her way of knowing within herself and I say knowing because its fact as described by the author they are friends and she only likes this guy only as a friend, to suddenly she's in love with him. It totally betray's everything between the hero and the heroin. She says she loves the hero more and can't live without him but she still is in love with the friend, and that she is going to suffer for eternity because she loves the other guy too.
Litterally from book one up until the point that a switch was flicked and suddenly from out of no where she is in this other guys arms I was constantly saying this is a great series. Not only was I very upset with the heroin with her actions and her greed, but I was saying wow this is now a Soap Opera. Days of Our Lives with Vampires and Werewolves here we come.
While I can say the book was good to get past some boring time and kept me occupied there was one thing always in the back of my mind while listening, and please bear in mind I comment from a military background. There is abolutley no way a civilian a foreign civilian even with his high power job is going to know the identities and opperations of Navy Seals. Understand one thing these guys are the best of the best. They themselves have so much security to those outside their command that it would be impossible for a civilian to just simply know who the team is and what they do in their opps. It would have been one thing if the author wrote how this guy paid some serious cash to hack info or bribe some high level people to learn the info he had of the Seals, but the author just simply made it broad information as though it was daily gossip of Seal Opps and members. Uh huh ya right...
Last comment about this book, its supposed to be a romance genre not a religious genre. Throughout the entire book there were 2 kisses thats it, there was over 3 hours dedicated to religion. note to author: less religion and more romance when your writing romance genre, you didn't even have a single love seen.
