This is one of the best books I have ever listened to. The story is entertaining and thought provoking. john Irving's writing style is both educated and easy to grasp. The reading by Joe Barrett could not have been better. His range in voice and accent is impressive and he truly brought the characters to life -- especially Owen Meany (whose voice will echo in my head for years). I highly recommend this book to anyone other than those who do not allow themselves to think critically about religion or nationalism. For those, it should be mandatory.
I probably would not listen to Dr. Sleep again because it's not the kind of book that one gets much insight from. it's not terribly thought provoking. But it's good story.
Everything disappointed me about this production. The only thing the narrator did well was present a voice for the main character that was just as feeble, annoying, and bitchy as the character in the story. The book is so poorly written I am sure that my 13 year old son could have done a better job. The characters are 2 dimensional stereotypes. What little story exists is trite and difficult to believe. As a work of supposedly erotic fiction, the sex scenes are terribly short, worded without imagination, and lack detail.
I knew I would dislike it from the first paragraph, but I continued in the hopes that it might get better. I only finished it out of stubbornness. I wouldn't recommend this garbage to anyone. It is the most poorly written work of fiction I've ever read.
She could have written it as though she were writing for adults with some experience of the world and some level of reading proficiency. She should not have written it in the present tense. She should have written a female character with a personality rather than a collection of cliches and stereotypes. She should have thought of a story for the characters to journey through, developing along the way. She should have written sex scenes with better detail and more descriptive language. She should have included some male characters that were not 100% stereotypes. she should have done a little bit of research into the b&d world so that she could write it into a believable and exciting work of fiction.
Basically, she did everything wrong.
It could be that Becca Battoe's performance was incredibly good considering how poorly Anastasia Steele is written. So, I am a little bit curious to hear her read a well-written novel.
I would cut every single one, but especially Anastasia Steele.
Don't buy this book. If you think you want to read it, go to the library and read a few pages. You will change your mind.
This book is a very interesting mixture of good science fiction and biological theory. The story is not easily predictable and the characters are rich. There are a lot of concepts I have not seen in other sci fi.
Mr. Gaminara's range of voice and accent is wonderful. He is a great reader. I will buy other books that he has narrated without knowing much of about them because I'm sure that he improves the experience of the story.
