  • The Mind and the Brain: Neuroplasticity and the Power of Mental Force

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 27 mins)
    • By Jeffrey M. Schwartz, Sharon Begley
    • Narrated By Arthur Morey

Conventional science has long held the position that 'the mind' is merely an illusion, a side effect of electrochemical activity in the physical brain. Now in paperback, Dr Jeffrey Schwartz and Sharon Begley's groundbreaking work, The Mind and the Brain, argues exactly the opposite: that the mind has a life of its own. Dr Schwartz, a leading researcher in brain dysfunctions, and Wall Street Journal science columnist Sharon Begley demonstrate that the human mind is an independent entity that can shape and control the functioning of the physical brain.

Douglas says: "Do Not Mistake The Message Here For Dualism!"
"Interesting premise, but gets too weighed down"
Would you listen to The Mind and the Brain again? Why?

Probably not - I honestly couldn't get through the whole recording. I still have >1 hour left in the recording, but I felt it was becoming far too weighed down with repetitive scientific studies instead of discussing their application near the end.

    Any additional comments?

I absolutely loved the first half of this book. I am a physician and was intrigued by the evidence that they present that has a clinical application for my own patients, as well as friends and family. However, the 2 hours spent describing in detail the atrocities performed on lab-chimps was wholly unnecessary. It was not enjoyable listening, and truly not what the book was about. I really appreciated the scientific results of the chimp studies, but the message got lost. As the story progressed, it moved from a more clinical application to repetitively belaboring endless studies. The premises in this book about how we learn, how our brain learns and changes, and how we can use this information to change the way we teach ourselves and our kids is amazingly useful- but I think a lot of people aren't going to read it because of the length and serious scientific studies. A revision for the lay-person just discussing the results and clinical application would be very useful. I would still recommend the book for what can be learned - but with the caveat that there may be some times you really have to stick with it and tough it out.

    Any additional comments?

Seriously - if you have any interest at all in self-improvement, spiritual growth and learning to live a life free and in the present, you need to read this book. This is one of those things that I can't even describe in a review - this book is an investment in yourself, and i encourage everybody to read it. Seriously. Just trust that sometimes the Universe puts a message in your path that will help change your life and make you grow into a better person - this is that message.

  • No Excuses!: The Power of Self-Discipline for Success in Your Life

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 56 mins)
    • By Brian Tracy
    • Narrated By Brian Tracy

Most people think success comes from good luck or enormous talent, but many successful people achieve their accomplishments in a simpler way: through self-discipline. Brian Tracy knows this firsthand. He didn’t graduate from high school, and after working for a few years as a laborer, he realized he had limited skills and a limited future. But through the power of self-discipline, he changed his life.

    Steve says: "Highly Motivational!"
    "Fantastic, unique perspective on discipline"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. Brian Tracy does a fantastic job of showing his readers why having and exerting discipline is so important.

What did you like best about this story?

Brian Tracy addresses the need for discipline in every aspect of your life - business, finances, personal life, relationships and raising kids. He not only shows you why having discipline in these categories is so important - he shows you step by step what actions need to be taken to achieve that discipline. This is truly an eye opening, engaging book that can be used by anyone, at any stage in their life. He also touches on the Law of Attraction, though I don't believe he directly refers to it as such.

Have you listened to any of Brian Tracy’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

His performance was excellent. The reading of the book was in a very natural, conversant tone that makes it clear that he is an excellent public speaker and presenter. His tone varies based on the content, and portrays a level of seriousness when he needs to drive a point home, and joviality when drawing the listener in. I would certainly listen to his audiobooks in the future.

    Any additional comments?

Overall, this is a fantastic book for anyone who struggles with excuses and lack of self-discipline in their life. Tracy's approach is both no-nonsense and empathetic. He knows that it is not easy to change your behaviors - but he adamantly believes that you can make your life absolutely anything that you want it to be by applying his methods. You truly get the sense that he cares what becomes of your life, and wants the best for you. Listen to it.
