"Like hearing from and old friend."
I love Odd Thomas, have read the first 4 books, and was concerned when I read the reviews, good and bad. Not knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised. I heard the same old Odd (namely, David Aaron Baker) with all his quirkiness and zenlike philosophy. Dean Koontz presented a darker story this time and I think there was some confusion in the plot, but I found I could fast forward through the dark parts and still not miss too much of the story. It was hard to understand the story at first, but it wasn't too long before I was hooked again. Most Koontz books are a little too much for me, but this "horror-lite" is about as much suspense I can take. As I wait for the next book, I know I will reread some of the old ones.
"My husband thought I had lost my mind."
Yes, this was a strange choice for me and I had doubts too. But I actually thought it was one of the most interesting stories I have heard in a long time. I learned more about Lincoln's life than I ever had previously with the combination of fact/fiction. Lincoln became a real person, a very real character in this story. This was not just a history lesson, I looked forward to the next chapter. Even the vamprire aspect was believable. If you enjoy reading about history and can stretch your imagination, you will love this. I did lose my mind, it was totally engrossed in this book.
"Just could not finish this book"
I usually enjoy Jodi Picoult's books and love George Guidall's narration. But this was one of the most disappointing I have read. I really tried to finish this book at least three times, sure that there was something important I was missing, but couldn't do it. Story was extremely complicated, depressing and I hated all the suicide. I am sorry I paid attention to other reviews and wasted my money on this one.
"Love animals, hated this book"
I found this book disappointing, crude, and not at all funny. Couldn't really relate any of the stories to real situations, but maybe that's just me. This is not at all what I expected and should have paid more attention to the negative reviews. I'm a long time listener of books from Audible, but this one was truly awful. This book has recieved a lot of attention in the press but because of the author not the story. Too bad.
"Not such a "great house""
After hearing an interesting, not quite positive, review on NPR, I decided to give this book a try. What a waste of time and money. The story was disjointed and there were no characters I could be interested in. It was overly wordy and even after listening several times to the same section, I was still confused. What was the whole thing about the great white shark? Save your credits or money. I must admit the narration was excellent but still didn't make any of the characters interesting. I hope the story came together at the end,but I didn't get that far.
"The Hollow"
This is not the first Nora Roberts book I have heard. I found this one a waste of time. It seemed to be aimed at a teenage audience. The constant worry about whether to have sex or not was boring. Was that intended to be "romantic?" All I could think was "get over it." I really couldn't care about any of the characters.
The actual story of the pagan stone was found in the last 30 minutes with brief "encounters with evil" tossed in here and there.
I have read previous reviews of this book and find myself in the minority. Many of the sub plots (the wedding dress) didn't fit into the story perhaps because I didn't hear the first 2 books. Maybe there will be a sequel but it will not be on my list.
The narration was OK. I hated the loud, whiny voice for some of the women.
"Scat"
This was a very predictable story. Interesting but a bit too long. What really made it very hard to finish was the terrible narration, sometimes garbled, too loud, too fast and with horrible voice changes for each character. After many attempts to finish, I did reach the end. Another narrator would have made a better book and a much easier listen.
"Made me jumpy"
I don't know what I was expecting from this story. The main character jumps from place to place, followed by killing, more jumping, more killing. I must have missed the explanation of who/what was chasing him, killing his friend and obviously not appreciating his jumping ability. Don't recommend "jumping" into this book.
"Disappointing"
Incantation is not what I usually expect from Alice Hoffman. Predictable and too simplistic even for teens.
"the perils? of Lillian"
I began this story with great expectations based on many reviews I read. Sadly, it did not live up to these reviews. The story was chaotic, with flashbacks and fast forwards. The super-hero adventures of Lillian were unbelievable. To travel from NY to Alaska alone, trading sex for passage because she has no money, finding a boat in Alaska, she pilots herself across icy seas, again alone. And after all the perils of Lillian, and there are many more, comes the disappointing end. Some sections were interesting, but all-in-all the story was unbelievable and doesn't deserve the praise it got.
