I bought this "first of a series" on sale and wow, am I glad I did. I am a voracious reader and this was one of the best sci-fi reads I've enjoyed in a long time. A large cast of believable characters with problems to solve and creative solutions to them. Good good-guys and not-so-good good-guys.
I enjoyed this so much I've bought several more in the series. If you like programs like Star Trek, you'll really love these books.
...but there's always an exception. This woman sounded (as she carefully enunciated every word) like she was reading to a child not like she was telling a tale. I don't know about the story because I pitched the book early because of the narration.
I really liked the story, although you REALLY have to suspend disbelief. The one drawback is that it doesn't end. You need to read the next book to tie up lots of very loose ends. I don't think this has to discourage you, just be warned.
I loved this book and will read on in the series. A great premise of two warring extra-terrestrials with the earth caught in the middle.
I read his Genghis Khan bio and loved it. This one is a bit too "factual" without the glimpses of the people's smaller activities. Maybe the scope was too big and he should have singled out fewer women to profile.
I had downloaded this book a while ago so when I started listening I didn't remember that it's non-fiction. A well told tale of a serial murderer over a span of several decades - how the police missed several opportunities to identify him and how, eventually, a sophisticated DNA search finally brought him to justice.
I shouldn't pan a book just because it wasn't what I thought it was but once I realized what it was (a novel not a fantasy) I listen on bravely but couldn't get into it.
Fun stuff with a consistency that's important to such books - the characters don't suddenly jump in with bizarre powers you never suspected before as has happened with other books I've read.
I know everyone else seems to love this book but it didn't do it for me. Every time a character got into a tough situation someone has another super-power and saves the day. It was much too contrived for my taste.
Again, I wanted to like this book but it didn't catch my interest. Many characters with odd names and I found I lost track. I got in about half an hour, then lost it. Sometimes it's just my mood. Love the narrator - Mr. Rudniki could read the phone book and I'd listen - hmmmmm, just not this book.
I was looking for something light and easy and I found it in this. Sort of like Janet Evanovich. If you're looking for something serious, pass this by.
