Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote...and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Very well thought out and original. Not as incredible in terms of a horror story, but more as a super natural story.

What did you like best about this story?

The idea that a hotel can be alive is great.

What about Campbell Scott’s performance did you like?

Scott was made to narrate for King.

If you could rename The Shining, what would you call it?

    The Overlook

Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, Joyland tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carny and confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever. Joyland is a brand-new novel and has never previously been published.

Would you try another book from Stephen King and/or Michael Kelly?

Stephen King, yes. Michael Kelly, depends on the book. Kelly only worked in this one because he sounds young, and the main character is young.

Would you be willing to try another book from Stephen King? Why or why not?

Yes. I've read and listened to a lot King books, and most of the time he delivers. If it's not one of his more recognized efforts, then chances are it's just so so. Joyland fits into the so so category.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Michael Kelly?

    Kelly worked fine.

Do you think Joyland needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No. Its not a "follow-up" type of story. What it needs is more material.

    Any additional comments?

This story had true potential, but fell way short of what it could have been. I wanted to read more about the mystery at the park instead of the young man who comes of age. The setting was great, and I though King would dive in a mix things up, but it was an opportunity lost. The result was a bland story.

When the book ended it didn't leave me wanting more, or feeling a connection with the characters...it was just over, and I kind of wanted my money back.

Would you try another book from Stephen King and/or Lorna Raver?

Stephen King, yes, Lorna Raver, maybe.

What could Stephen King have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

He should have shaved a hundred or more pages off the story (typical for him). The editing was poor, and the character arcs didn't match the intensity that King was trying to achieve. The entire thing seemed to fall apart about three quarters of the way through and it wasn't that good to begin with.

Would you be willing to try another one of Lorna Raver’s performances?

Depends on the book. She did poorly on some characters, but her narrative voice was solid throughout. I think she was the wrong person for the story.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The book had parts that kind of kept interest, but it was very scattered. I understand why he said he didn't remember writing much of the story, I would want to forget it too. He had to be drunk to come up with something like Cujo.

This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Maybe. If you are able to push through the last three hundred pages, when the story goes in the tank, then it might satisfy overall. It has some really good parts and fun characters, but falls short because it's too long... if that makes sense. It's also has over the top violence that King ramps up for no reason. I'm not a big fan of that, but I guess he does have a reputation to maintain.

Would you ever listen to anything by Stephen King again?

    Yes

What about Grover Gardner’s performance did you like?

He was steady, not bad or great, just steady.

Did The Stand inspire you to do anything?

    Not listen to it again.
