This is the story of Margaret Hale, a young English woman who accompanies her family's move from rural southern England to the industrial north. It proves to be a difficult change, with all the attendant social conflicts and cultural misunderstandings consequent to such situations. It is a study in contrasts. Mrs. Gaskell created one of the Victorian era's greatest heroines in Margaret Hale, a young lady of passionate intensity.

Get a different reader! This is a lovely book, and Juliet Stevenson was perfection. My guess is that Prunella Scales would also be a better choice. I've listened to a few books that I quit because of the reader, but this was the first time (in 300 audio books) that I actually switched versions because the reader was so inappropriate to the material.

Molly Gibson lost her mother when she was a child. Any stepmother would have been a shock, but the new Mrs Gibson is a self-absorbed, silly little widow, and Molly's unhappiness is compounded by the realisation that her father has come to regret his second marriage.

I just devoured this book! The characters are beautifully etched, with great humor and great sympathy. A truly fun book, and Prunella Scales is perfection. Can't wait to listen to more from her!
Gasped when I got to the end, and found it was unfinished - but only a few pages short of the end. There is no doubt about how it will all turn out, but it's a shame she didn't get to finish it. Don't let that deter you - it's a delight.

Plantaganet Palliser, Prime Minister of England - a man of power and prestige, with all the breeding and inherited wealth that goes with it - is appalled at the inexorable rise of Ferdinand Lopez. An exotic impostor, seemingly from nowhere, Lopez has society at his feet, while well-connected ladies vie with each other to exert influence on his behalf - even Palliser’s own wife, Lady Glencora.

I have listened to over 250 audio books over 20 plus years. My taste is eclectic, but I do tend towards longer books, because I get more bang for my buck!

I have really enjoyed the Palliser series. This one is reasonably balanced between politics and characters, don't let the title fool you.

Of all the Palliser novels so far, I believe this one is the most dependent on the previous novels, although they are all independently enjoyable, each focusing on a different tangent line of characters.

But the great pleasure of this book is Timothy West. He a truly brilliant reader, and the perfect match for all Trollope.
