"Good Ole Abe!"
I have had to go back and change my rating from 4 stars to 5 stars. I realized that of all the books I have read over the last couple years, I find myself thinking about this one very often. I truly regret having borrowed it from the library rather than purchasing it because it is a keeper. I have a number of people that I could have lent it to and know, with confidence, that they would enjoy it. I like this book too because I think it appeals to all audiences and not just Urban Fantasy fans.
I know without a doubt that I learned more history of Ol' Abe in this book than I did in fourth grade. Even though I wrote an "A+" paper about my favorite president back then, illustrated no less, I have to admit Seth Grahame-Smith did a better job. It pains me to know that he he gave up this theme because all the vermin writers out there had to steal his idea and run with it. I can't blame him and will consider this one of my all time favorite books.
"Interesting and fun"
This is an original take on the urban fantasy genre with Weather Gins. It has a strong start for a series and piqued my interest. The narration is wonderful and I plan on listening to the rest of the series.
"Road Trip Hell"
This is my favorite in the series so far. You get to spend three days on a road trip with Jenks, Rachel, Ivy, and Trent Calamack as they face the biggest challenges so far.
A terrible evil is unleashed and causes battles so ugly that they still linger in my memory months later. Captivating, exciting, and heart pounding! It is a brilliant listen!!!!
"Brilliant!"
This is an excellent addition to one of my favorite Urban Fantasy series. Kim Harrison writes a beautiful story richly layered with wonderful characters, action, adventure, love, and heart break.
All my favorite characters are in this book and we get a peek at an unexpected side of both Trent Calamack and Al. Make sure to listen or read these books in order for the full experience. Marguerite Gavin does a terrific job with her narration. This is my second favorite in the series second only to Pale Demon.
"Compelling Southern Gothic tale"
I listened to this book and it was the most dramatic studio presentation I have listened to so far. It had sound effects and original music scores that made the listening a real joy.
I found the book original and the story compelling. There is visual imagery that will linger with me for weeks and characters that I quickly identified with and grew to love. I enjoyed the excerpts that bring the reader back to the civil war. I love anything with time travel and flashbacks. I didn't care for the way the authors under estimated the readers ability to interpret what was going on, even if it is a young adult book it doesn't need to be "dumbed down". Overall it was a great book and the love of libraries and classic literature rang through the whole book and struck a strong note with me.
I must say that the movie recently released didn't do the book justice and they missed so many opportunities to really capture parts of the story that would have been spectacular on film. I know movies are never as good as the book but they really missed the mark with this one.
"Urban Fantasy at it's Best!"
I loved this book but hated parts of it. Once again the book is nonstop action that leaves your head spinning and your heart reeling. There is a particularly steamy scene, which is the first in the series that I remember, that made quite an impression with me. The world building continues and The Hollows becomes more complicated and intriguing.
I would warn folks that it you are a big Rachel fan you may want to make sure that you finish the book in private because there are some heart wrenching events that are better read uninterrupted. A great book.
"So-So for Nora"
This book fell a little flat for me. I liked the characters and the plot idea but it just felt a little contrived and not up to Nora's usual standards. I bought the whole series in advance so I am hoping for an improvement. I might have just had really high expectations after reading "The Circle Trilogy" that I adored. I will finish the series but it definitely shifted to the bottom of my TBR pile.
The narration was good but the female voices were a tad cheesy.
"I"m officially a Jack Reacher fan!"
My first experience with Jack Reacher and I am completely WOWED! A smart action packed mystery with a sprinkling of subtle clues and it kept me completely intrigued from start to finish. I will definitely be reading more!
"Rachel Rocks!"
This book is action packed and full of adventure! Rachel Morgan becomes more involved with demons and her relationships with Ivy Tamwood and Nick evolve. The gang actually leave Cincinnati on a rescue mission which causes a unique set of challenges. We get to see Jenks in a whole new light which makes this my favorite in The Hollows series so far.
I listened to this on audio and while I enjoy Marguerite Gavin's narration many sentences were halting and broke the flow of the book. She even made mistakes with character's voices a few times which was terribly distracting. Whoever was in charge of production really dropped the ball but I still loved the book.
"Worth the Hype!"
This book is amazing from the first word to the last. It is an engaging, exciting, adrenaline pumping , heart wrenching tale. I am just glad the second book was waiting in my library because I would have gone insane waiting for the next book. It leaves you hanging and hungry for more. Patrick Rothfuss is a genious! The narration is perfectly performed and a real joy to listen too. Don't miss out on this book if you are a fan of fantasy or just a fan of a brilliantly woven story.
