Mirabelle, the "shopgirl" behind the glove counter at Neiman Marcus, is slightly lost, off-kilter, and shy. But there's something about Mirabelle. Steve Martin reads this charming novella. Hear an interview with the author and browse more Martin.

For anybody who has ever had an intergenerational relationship or tried to think they could love a woman incompletely, this story will have the ring of truth. I have had these feelings and committed the same mistakes in my life with similar results. I loved this book so much. Last night, I saw the movie with the same title. It was just as good as the book and cast SO well. But, I missed the detail and narrative that added the depth to the book.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

I enjoyed this listen very much. Nobody in the west ever gets to see what life was like in Afghanistan before and under the Taliban, it was fascinating and expertly illuminated. I felt like I was there. Even though it tells a story from a different part of the world, the emotional threads mirrored the emotional struggles I've had in my life with my own adopted brother. I would highly recommend this audiobook because the emotional content feels so real.
