It's extremely hard to follow this story. There are tons of jumps in time with no explanation as to why we went to whatever time it is. The characters are all forgettable. There is no firm ground for you as a reader to explore this world. Way to much happening with no common theme or character to hold it all together. Interesting concepts but not executed brilliantly.
If you actually know anything about psychology this may seem insulting at times. However the research is well presented and interesting. The authors have clearly done a lot of thinking on the subject.
The narration is extremely dry even for a non-fiction. You have to keep your mind on topic and sometimes that's hard.
Wow, elocution is not this guys strong point. Nothin' like them sloppy vowels. I often had to think hard about what I thought he was trying to say. You'd think someone paid to talk would be expected to do actually be able to do it.
However, the content was great, if you can ignore the horrible narrator.
I get that fantasy works on being happy go lucky. The bad guy gets killed by the good guy. I liked the first book well enough to go onto the second one. However when I got to the end of this I felt like finding the author, tying my iPod to a rock and hurling it through his window.
He had an opportunity to do something brave that would have caused real conflict and made us feel something for the protagonist Vin. Instead, he copped out big time. I listened to this over a year ago and it still makes me physically ill to think of it.
If you like formulaic regurgitated stuff, then you may very well like this. Obviously, I'm one of the only people who gave this a bad review. I just think in a genre like fantasy there should be fantastic stories not triteness wrapped with a few new "powers."
This isn't formatted like a mystery novel though toward the end you do need some answers. The writing is engaging enough that there never seems to be "slow" parts. There isn't a lot of heavy milieu stuff like some Asimov. He really lets the story move with characters that you can care about. I think this is the best Asimov I've read/listened to to date.
