Witch and day-walking demon Rachel Morgan knows magic - earth, ley line, even the forbidden demon magic - and that knowledge has saved her life more than once. But now something - or someone - is attacking Cincinnati and the Hollows, causing spells to backfire or go horribly wrong while living vampires attack humans and Inderlanders alike. The pressures build when the city is quarantined to contain the unreliable magic, and Rachel must stop the attacks before the undead vampire masters who keep the rest of the undead under control are lost and it becomes all-out supernatural war.

What a great story! Trent and Rachel work very well together now, and there are the usual interferences from Trent's "ex". Newt is very much front and center in this tale, adding adventure and a lot of story backfill that makes the book a rich read. Have a listen to this one for a great escape!

An unexpected phone call heralds a new challenge for Mercy. Her mate Adam’s ex-wife is in trouble, on the run from a stalker. Adam isn’t the kind of man to turn away a person in need—and Mercy knows it. But with Christy holed up in Adam’s house, Mercy can’t shake the feeling that something about the situation isn’t right. Soon her suspicions are confirmed when she learns that Christy has the furthest thing from good intentions. She wants Adam back, and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get him, including turning Adam’s pack against Mercy.

Patricia Briggs continues with her excellent story telling in this 8th book of the Mercy Thompson series. The story starts with a sure way to keep things tense in the pack, and the source of that tension (Adam's ex-wife) seems to bring on even more serious issues the whole pack ends up having to deal with. There are some very scary twists and turns in the story toward the climax that had me saying to myself "OH NO!".

Lorelei King does her usual superb job of narrating the book, taking the listener right into Mercy's world. I just love how she manages to change her voice to make Adam sound masculine...a true artist!

If you have no problem listening to a professor whose delivery is more pedantic than spontaneous, this is a fair medium to learn from. Otherwise, I'd recommend that it be read from a book. Tweezing out the jewels while listening to someone speak in the fashion Tim Conway used to drive his audience nuts by doing his slow talk routine is a tough job. I did manage to finish the course but I had to deliberately choose when to listen such as days I was particularly patient. As mentioned in the title, the suggestions are good. Getting to them is not.

    Story

For those who have been reading Faith Hunter's Jane Yellowrock series and following Jane's/Beast's growing pains, this book is the icing on the series cake. All the substance from the prior stories evolve exponentially in this book, taking readers through all the strong emotions, rage, dispair, righteous anger and of course, love.

Jane's best friend's husband, Evan, starts this book by literally blowing into town, and knocking down Jane's front door to demand she send his wife (Molly) out. Trouble is, Jane hasn't seen her friend and the entire series of adventures begins with the new Yellowrock Securities taking on the task of finding Molly.

The book is rich in developing existing characters into more realistic dimensions and in bringing the reader face-to-face with ethical choices, challenging physical limits and literally finding out who Jane's real friends are.

Faith has successfully woven several plot lines coming from the outside toward a central cause with such artistry that the reader is literally stunned from the exciting story telling when the conclusion drops into place. For the newbies to this series, the Jane Yellowrock World Companion might be a good "add on" to this book, but get this one first, you won't regret it.

Khristine Hvam IS Jane Yellowrock, and does a perfect job of rendering the character in all her moods. Enjoy this audiobook!

For the first time - in one Audible-exclusive collection - it's 13 stories of Jane Yellowrock, the shape-shifting skinwalker and vampire hunter for hire whose business card reads, "Have Stakes - Will Travel". Jane carries inside her the soul of her Beast, the mountain lion's soul which merged with hers when she accidently performed black magic as a child. Now, she and her Beast stalk the dark streets of New Orleans, bringing rogue vampires true death.

Cat o' Nine Tales, is a delightful mix of previously published favorite short stories about Jane Yellowrock, many through the eyes of her friends and adversaries, and two new novellas wading into adventures connected with her weir-tainted love interest and his extended family.

For die-hard Jane Yellowrock readers who've read everything in print they could find, the new stories included in this collection will absolutely titillate, as they divulge more information about Rick LaFleur, and introduce a whole new group of characters to the Yellowrock saga with adventure to spare!

Faith Hunter continues to showcase her mastery of urban fantasy short story thrillers in this excellent collection, and I highly recommend the read.

Khristine's rendition of the characters simply "make" them. She's a consumate artist with her reading. And, need I add, she is positively Jane personified.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Well, not laugh or cry, but definitely inspired admiration for Jane's strength and character.

Yes, Natalie Gold reads the characters so well. She brings them to life.

I liked Natalie's "voice" for Thorn's character and the life she breathes into the other characters.

Yes, and it was almost that...

Absolutely! While Patricia Briggs is best known for her Mercy Thompson and Wolf Pack stories, this first of a two book story was a truly surprisingly entertaining departure from her usual subjects.

The dragon boy...because he was so wise.

What does Joe Manganiello bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Joe brings personality to the characters that might not convey through just reading the book.

Oliver Sacks' The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat tells the stories of individuals afflicted with fantastic perceptual and intellectual aberrations: patients who have lost their memories and with them the greater part of their pasts; who are no longer able to recognize people and common objects; who are stricken with violent tics and grimaces or who shout involuntary obscenities; whose limbs have become alien; who have been dismissed as retarded yet are gifted with uncanny artistic or mathematical talents.

What did you like best about this story?

It opened up the world to some of the oddest self-perception dysfunctions known to medical practice. Hard to believe the mind tries so hard to work around some truly enormous deficits in order to function.
