"Finally...an answer to the Blay/Quinn dilemma...."
Power, loyalty, honesty.
J.R. Ward's writing style. She never gives in to the easy answers and is straight forward in her writing. Powerful ideas elegantly expressed. I also like the odd phrases she makes up to describe actions in progress.
I'm not sure Jim was comfortable with the reading in this story...paused where there were none and had unique twists of phrase but his timber and voice were good.
Hold on to your undies ladies...if you wear 'em!
Lover at last is a worthy addition to the black dagger brotherhood series and brings the story full circle about a plot issue that developed in the very beginning of the series. It's a satisfying read.
"Kenyon Does It Again! Nick Is Back!"
First and foremost, the stories about Nick are extremely entertaining...everything from demon rage to fumbling and embarrassed, Nick takes us all (readers) to places we've been and can relate to.
Second, please don't lose Holter Graham. He brings all of the dark hunter/Nick books to true life. It's amazing to realize after hearing the book that Holter never misses a beat, or voice even when switching from Nick's mom to Nick to Ash...what a talent!
Well, Ash is my first place character because he tries to mentor Nick through very trying circumstances without giving too much away about why he knew what he was talking about. Nick is smart enough to listen and remember.
Holter Graham's interpretation and voice. He renders power, awe, and pure embarrassment so realistically you all but feel a part of the scene being read. He is the perfect choice to read these books of Kenyon's.
Nick is back...badder than ever!
The only other thing to add is "Wow". Excellent book, characters are growing and there are always fresh plots...don't know how Sherrilyn Kenyon does it but I'm sure glad she does!
"Mercy and Adam (Oh My!)"
Coyote changes rules!
In this book Mercy was my favorite character but Adam was a close second. Bran was the ultimate hero though.
Mercy started from a "ground zero" amount of information to mount a campaign of rescue for her mate and her pack. She showed her usual ingenuity and "take now, apologize later" moxy to get the job done.
Mercy's rescue of Warren's partner with the Moor.
Just an inordinate amount of excitement and frustration as everyone played their parts to rescue the pack and it's alpha. Patricia Briggs showed impact without too much "mush" and lots of courage. Even Ben is shown in a better light.
Put on your shape shifter hat and read this book...it's really very good and excellently read if you listen to it rather than read it.
"Linkubus Lives!"
The Linkubus Lives!
Link, of course, whose story this is. A beautifully rendered tale about what happens to Link after he's bitten by the half breed during his stand with his friends during Beautiful Darkness. Link is his usual funny self (without thinking he's funny) and the dialog between him and Ridley.
When Link is going through the physical changes after being bitten and learning to deal with inordinate strength, trying to deal with his new dietary needs and his mother's suspicions.
No, no extreme reactions but I did laugh, often, because Link is just funny.
This short story was well worth the reading before beginning Beautiful Chaos because it fills in Link's storyline to bring you up to speed for the next book.
"Love at Last! Answers to all those questions!"
Yes, I'd recommend this book to any who would listen to my recommendations. This book is full of expression of humanity's highest emotions and sacrifices....romance, heart break, magic, and of course, love of all kinds. Along the line, questions posed early in the series are answered...sometimes so quickly as to be missed if the reader isn't paying close attention, which leads to a VERY satisfying end to this story. Very deep subjects are probed, sensitively articulated, making this an excellent story. Will and the Silent Brothers take on a larger role in this tale, as do Gideon and Gabriel Lightwood, which fills in their background for the Shadow Hunter series.
City of Lost Souls...for the same reasons stated above.
A beautiful rendering of local dialects and expression of the Welsh language. A poet's intonation of a 19th century story that totally suits the tale. Very romantic in terms of Will especially.
Oh yes, more than one. Often chuckled at some of the wit that Will tossed about and shed tears toward the end of the story but can't say why without it being a spoiler. Suffice it to say they were tears of happiness and sadness at the same time.
By all means, read this book and have a special person about you when you do, because you're going to want hugs several times throughout this story.
"Rachel Morgan Finally Comes into Her Own"
The reader does an excellent job of rendering each of the characters in this book, keeping the "suspension of disbelief" in effect without interruption from misqueued character voices. Listening to the book was exciting and as gripping as if I'd had the book in my hands, reading for dear life!
Kim H. has brought Rachel Morgan's story a very long way since the beginning of the series and in this book, it's a great satisfaction to see her growth and that of the characters she deals with. Kudos to Kim on this.
Voice shows moods and intonation that it's just impossible to get from reading the words. Great interpretation by Marguerite here.
Actually tried to but hadda sleep sometime!
Only that I heartily recommend this installation in the Rachel Morgan series. Those of you who have followed from the beginning will really enjoy this one.
"Manima Comes Into Her Own"
It's About Time.
Ilisidi and Bren Cameron. Illisidi comes into her own in this story, showing how life experience can very often save a potentially fatal situation, and Bren comes through with his ability to finesse communications between differing species.
Only in other books of this series and every one of them was perfectly read by Daniel Thomas May.
Yup.
In a time where being old is akin to being superfluous and powerless, it's a great pleasure to remember what role our most life-experienced members of society have to offer those just getting their start. This story brings Bren, and the Atevi through perilous times and circumstance based on the actions of the youngest and eldest members of their society. A story of self-discipline, loyalty and open-mindedness that can't be put down until the end.
"A Comfortably Unique World"
Absolutely! Even knowing the plot and the characters involved, HEARING the tale told again after a bit of time is still incredibly entertaining...like a favorite holiday movie.
Kim Harrison's "The Holows" series seems at first an odd comparison but not if you consider the wonderful twists and turns in plot due to that reality's rules...same with the Atevi series...always surprises because of newly revealed species and social rules.
No, this is my first experience with Daniel Thomas May's readings but he definitely has the right tone and timbre of voice for this series of stories. He's able to capture the various characters' personalities very nicely with voice variations and he stays on pitch for each one.
I think the whole notion of a human in the midst of such a different society moves me. That and how Bren Cameron tries to balance being with Atevi and of humans...a tough dance, is very poignant.
Yes, read the series, start at the beginning and enjoy the journey. If you like Star Trek or Star Gate you'll likely enjoy this set of books.
"Jane Yellowrock Rocks!"
The audio version of Skinwalker is a GREAT enhancer for the story, even if you've already read it in hard copy. Listening to the story being read can bring to the foreground things we missed while reading...there is less distraction when you have the ear buds in than when you're reading and can hear traffic, airplanes, kids etc. Definitely recommend listening in addition to reading in this case.
Jane and Beast, no two ways about it.
Khristine's work with various accents and sometimes hard as nails 'tude fits right into the story. Better than reading in my imagination could have done.
Not only was it one I wanted to listen to in one sitting, it was one I tried to listen to in one sitting but the body was weak and fell asleep...good thing I could turn that selector wheel back on my player.
For that extra dimension and drama in the story, listen to it and be carried away.
"Unpretentious, audacious and hugely funny!"
What I loved most was how apt the title was regarding this genius' style of living. The impossible simply didn't exist, and his audacity got him into so many hilarious adventures that it's worth listening to this book for the sake of the humor alone. I'd not downplay the more serious aspects of Mr. Feynman's life, but this book has an ideal mix of his hilarious and serious experiences.
I believe one of the memorable moments in Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman was the recounting of the tale where he insisted he would give his signature no more than 13 times in a transaction for a lecture. When the 14th document inevitably arrived to be signed, he refused...putting the organization into consternation since it was the document to pay him for his services....and he wouldn't sign...Now there's a man who knows how to say "no"!
I think my most favorite scene was when he went to dances held by a society for deaf people to congregate and to feel more comfortable in social situations. It was amazing and funny to hear how he snookered a non-hearing impaired bar tender all evening. Don't want to spoil the fun as to how he did that..people will just have to listen to the book!
Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman...the tale of a genius who's just like you and me, only funnier.
Can't recommend this audiobook highly enough. Not only is it a wonderfully written book but the reader does a spectacular job of delivering the content of the book as it must have been intended, through the words of Mr. Feynman. One word left to say...enjoy!
