Young Nicholas Hook is dogged by a curse, haunted by what he has failed to do and banished for what he has done. A wanted man in England, he is driven to fight as a mercenary archer in France, where he finds two things he can love: his instincts as a fighting man, and a girl in trouble. Together they survive the notorious massacre at Soissons, an event that shocks all Christendom. With no options left, Hook heads home to England, where his capture means certain death.

I love Bernard Cornwell's mixture of fiction and history - I wish I knew books like these existed when I was a kid taking boring history classes in high school (back in those days, history was always whitewashed - not a lot of detail about the scandals and tribulations of everyday life amongst the ruling classes.. except for Henry the VIII, of course..). These books always make me want to find out more about the battles being fought, as well as the reasons behind them. The description of the weapons - in this case the long bow, and its construction and use is fascinating. Naturally, the military tactics and the overall tragedy of war and its aftermath is well described in understandable terms. The character development is great, and Cornwell always shows the negative as well as the positive aspects of his heroes - nobody is ever perfect... etc, etc... I could go on and on.

Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?

If you could sum up Sycamore Row in three words, what would they be?

I almost croaked from lack of food, water, sleep. What a tale! Kept me wondering what the heck was going to happen all the way to the end. This is what I love about Grisham's books - all the little side stories that contribute to the complexity of the main plot get so nicely resolved and logically pieced together by the end of the story. All the characters are so well thought out and believable. Such artistry! May he live to quench our thirsty brains and phyches for many years to come. Bravo!

What made the experience of listening to Catching Fire the most enjoyable?

I saw the first of the series as the movie "Hunger Games", and was too impatient to wait for the sequel to come out. Logged on into Audible, and bought the audio books, "Catching Fire" and "Mocking Jay". I couldn't stop until I finished them both (was almost tempted to skip meals, sleep, etc).
