It happens quietly one August morning. As dawn's shimmering light drenches the humid Iowa air, two families awaken to find their little girls have gone missing in the night. Now these families are tied by the question of what happened to their children. And the answer is trapped in the silence of unspoken family secrets.

This was my second Heather Gudenkauf listen and I was not disappointed. I love the way she writes from the points of view from each character in her stories, and with different narrators for most of them it adds to making her books a great listen. The readers were cast very well with the exception of 12-year-old Ben, who had a more mature voice than his age represented. This does not take away from the books content however. Gudenkauf writes only the story, leaving out the fluff that some authors include, though you may not know it at first. Can't wait for her next book!

In the rural hamlet of Lark Rise and the market town of Candleford, life is marked by the pattern of the seasons and the customs of the countryside. Seen through the eyes of a young girl, Laura - based on Flora Thompson herself - 'Lark Rise to Candleford' portrays May Day celebrations and forgotten children's games, friends and relations, rivalries and lasting friendships. Full of gaiety and freshness of observation, this semi-autobiographical account is an endearing portrayal of a vanished way of life.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This "story" was lacking in plot. I listened for over an hour (it's only a 4 hour book) and there was never any character development. It was more of a very long description of a "hamlet" and its surrouding towns and life in the 1880's. If that's what you are looking for then you will like it.

Would you ever listen to anything by Flora Thompson again?

Perhaps. I'll give her a second chance.

What about Olivia Hallinan’s performance did you like?

She did a fine job. Her voices are not as good as some that I have heard.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Very disappointed. I expected something that I could sink my teeth into and this was just more like an essay.

    Any additional comments?

If you have ever seen the PBS series by the same name it won't compare.

To five-year-old Jack, Room is the entire world. It is where he was born and grew up; it's where he lives with his Ma. Room is home to Jack, but to Ma, it is the prison where Old Nick has held her captive for seven years. Through determination, ingenuity, and fierce motherly love, Ma has created a life for Jack. But she knows it's not enough...not for her or for him. She devises a bold escape plan, but what she does not realize is just how unprepared she is for the plan to actually work.

I debated for several weeks deciding if I could listen to a 5-year-old boy read a novel to me, but I'm glad I finally opted to hear it. The first half of the book was excellent. I was amazed at the content and author's way of telling the story. The second part of the book was less intriguing and I had many moments where I questioned how the events could or could not have happened. It is a good book dispite the reality or clarity of the situations and predicaments.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

    Overall

This was my first time listening to a book and it was the best experience I could have had! The book itself was extremely well-written and I didn't want to stop listening to it. The author writes in the dialect of her characters and listening to this book was probably a better experience than trying to read it. I didn't want this book to end! I will continue to choose books with multiple character readers as this ads to the storytelling features of the novel. If you are concerned about listening to a book instead of reading one, this is the book for you.
