I thought this was a great book. I read/listened to it after having seen the movie by the same name, although the similaritys are few. If you have seen the movie, it will not ruin the book for you. I started listening to the wrong portion of this book, and it was teribly confusing. I thought to myself, this author is rotten, there is no background on any of the characters, I have no idea why they are doing the things they are doing, or who is who. When I realized I had started int he middle of the book, and changed sections to listen to the first section I was much happier. (I was not quite used to listening on my new palm yet, much different than the MuVo better I would say.) At any rate, I was very pleased to find that there is a whole series of books about these characters. I intend to read/listen to all of them.
I thought I had the unabridged edition with Patrick Tull reading. I did not. I would recomend getting the unabridged version. This reader does a poor job with the different accents and voices, he makes all the characters sound shallow and in many cases too young. Part of the shallows ness could be that alot of the detail is left out in the abbridged version. At any rate get the unabridged version of this book. I have not listened to the unabridged version yet, but now I will have to get it and listen to this story again. Very frustrating.
I just finished listening to this book, and it is always frustrating how each book is ended leaving you wanting more. I know this is good because this is a very long series, but it is just a little odd. I have almost two weeks until I can download the next two books, and I dont know how I am going to wait. I am glad the author finaly had jack go on a somwhat normal naval trip. This was a realistic change from bounding here and there, dressing in bear's hides, sleeping with the admiral's wife, and having his ships constantly sunk. Since the name of the ship is in the title I dont think I am giving away too much by saying he kept the surprise in pretty much one piece for most of the story. I once again enjoyed the devolopment of Steven's character in the book, I find him a mystery sometimes. Although I did think this developement of stevens character was at the cost of developing Jack further. I guess this is why it is called the Aubrey/Maturin series, they will just have to share the spot light. Once again, I apreciate the Plot twists the author uses, and the false forshadowing verses true forshadowing. Overall, another good read, and I cant wait to read/listen to the sequal.
I actually gave the first book a 5. There is nothing wrong with this book. I enjoyed listening too it greatly, however parts of it were kind of a downer. I enjoyed the plot twists (hope that is not too revealing), and the intruduction of some new land bound female characters. I dont want to say too much, but how Jack can still be called 'Lucky Jack' is beyond me. The devolopment of stevens character in this book was also very pleasing. I still intend to finish the series.
