  • All He Ever Needed: The Kowalski Family, Book 4

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 36 mins)
    • By Shannon Stacey
    • Narrated By Renee Werbowski
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Mitch Kowalski lives out of a suitcase - and he likes it that way. Traveling for work has the added bonus of scaring off women who might try to tie him down. But when he's called home to help with the family lodge, he's intrigued by the new girl in town and her insistence that she doesn't need a man. If there's one thing Mitch can't resist, it's a challenge. Paige Sullivan is finally putting down roots. Determined to stand on her own two feet, she lives by the motto "Men are a luxury, not a necessity". But when Mr. Tall, Dark and Hot pulls up a stool in her diner and offers her six weeks of naughty fun with a built-in expiration date, she's tempted to indulge....

What disappointed you about All He Ever Needed?

The narrator. It was hard to tell if the writing was cheesy or if it was just the way she read things. Bad inflection, bad acting, bad reading of dialogue. Little differentiation between voices, really awkward stressing of words, and the "smile in her voice" was uncalled for when telling me about vacuum cleaners--a hint: they aren't that exciting.
    Bad bad bad.
Maybe I'll go grab the book from the library and give it a try that way.

Would you ever listen to anything by Shannon Stacey again?

Maybe, depending on the narrator. I have read her paper books and enjoyed a few of them.

Would you be willing to try another one of Renee Werbowski’s performances?

Not if you paid me. Nails on a chalkboard are probably better.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from All He Ever Needed?

Some of the excessive "tell and not show" stuff.

    Any additional comments?

Please don't waste your credits, readers. Go buy or rent the book and listen to something else. Stacey's books are usually enjoyable in print form, not the best but not awful either, but this was just baaaaaaad.

  • One Bite With a Stranger: The Others Series

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 11 mins)
    • By Christine Warren
    • Narrated By Kate Reading
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When Regina's friends insist on setting her up a "Fantasy Fix" to help her get over her cheating ex, she dreams up some kinky out-of-this-world encounters that they could never possibly bring to life. But the next thing Regina knows, her friends have got her laced into a shiny black corset, tight leather pants, and a sexy pair of stilettos. It's time for some downtown vampire-fantasy fun...

    "Save your credit"
Would you try another book from Christine Warren and/or Kate Reading?

    No on both counts

What do you think your next listen will be?

    Something not so mind-numbingly awful

What didn’t you like about Kate Reading’s performance?

Her pacing is strange, her male character voices are laughable, she sounded too old for any of the characters.

What character would you cut from One Bite With a Stranger?

All of them. TSTL Is fitting for all of them.

    Any additional comments?

It seemed like the author was going for funny vampire erotica, and she accomplished neither the funny or the sexy. There was nothing new here to make it stick out in the paranormal romance genre, and the sex scenes were so very, very, very, very, very long and drawn out and completely boring. The comedy aspects weren't funny at all. The story (if there was one, a fact I dispute) was a mish-mash of other books along the same lines that I've read before.
Insta-love? Check. I think this book took place in less than a weeks time.
    TSTL leads? Check check
A host of sidekick that are two dimensional and annoying? Check x infinity

It seems like those awful sidekicks are being set up for their own books, but seeing as I wanted to stab all of them with a rusty nail, I will not be sticking around to find out what happens next.

This was seriously bad. Save your credit and ignore the other reviews that made me spend a credit on this pile.

  • Rush: The Breathless Trilogy, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 9 mins)
    • By Maya Banks
    • Narrated By Adam Paul
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When Gabe Hamilton saw Mia Crestwell walk into the ballroom for his hotel’s grand opening, he knew he was going to hell for what he had planned. After all, Mia is his best friend’s little sister. Except she’s not so little anymore. And Gabe has waited a long time to act on his desires. Gabe has starred in Mia’s fantasies more than once, ever since she was a teenager with a huge crush on her brother’s best friend. So what if Gabe’s 14 years older? Mia knows he’s way out of her league, but her attraction has only grown stronger with time. She’s an adult now, and there’s no reason not to act on her most secret desires.

Would you try another book from Maya Banks and/or Adam Paul?

Maybe the narrator. This is my first time reading a Banks book, so if they're like this one, then no.

What could Maya Banks have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Made it seem believable? Dunno if she could, though. Gripes: A male character describing a female character's shoes and clothing in great detail doesn't scream "manly" to me. The dialogue was cheesy. Take away the sexual kink of the character, and there is nothing here that I haven't read in countless other romance titles. The book seemed a knockoff of fifty shades of grey-- which, yuck. Why won't it go away?!--down to the questionable "reasoning" (abusiveness) of the male lead and the idiocy of the female. Which is so, soooooo empowering...
All in all, not a good choice for me. I wish I'd seen that it was being touted as a fifty-like book in the iPhone compatible site because I'd have run the other way from this book and not wasted my money. Wish Audible would start doing that!
For those who think it's a fifty thing for me, it's not. It's just the book is unoriginal and can't even be saved from comparison with stellar writing.

Oh well, at least I can exchange it for something else, right :)

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Eh, don't think he added or detracted, really. He can only read what's there. Can't spitshine a pile, ya know?

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    "Save your credit"

This narrator has such over the top narration that I can't even finish listening. The book seems interesting though. Too bad.
