For eons, Earth has been under observation by the Firstborn, beings almost as old as the universe itself. The Firstborn are unknown to humankind - until they act. In an instant, Earth is carved up and reassembled like a huge jigsaw puzzle. Suddenly the planet and every living thing on it no longer exist in a single timeline.

    "Fun read!"
    Overall

It is fun to imagine the interaction of characters from vastly different time periods and societies. How do they react to being pulled from what is familiar? How do they deal with a culture that has different values from their own? One reviewer mentioned they felt the story was disjointed. I didn't feel that but part of the point is how do people react when their world becomes disjointed.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

    "A look into another world"
    Overall

A believable look into the South just prior to the Civil Rights movement of the sixties. The characters are so well portrayed, they are the story. The plot was almost not needed but it was surprisingly suspenseful for a story about housewives and their help.

  • To Say Nothing of the Dog: Or How We Found the Bishop's Bird Stump at Last

In this Hugo-winner from Connie Willis, when too many jumps back to 1940 leave 21st century Oxford history student Ned Henry exhausted, a relaxing trip to Victorian England seems the perfect solution. But complexities like recalcitrant rowboats, missing cats, and love at first sight make Ned's holiday anything but restful - to say nothing of the way hideous pieces of Victorian art can jeopardize the entire course of history.

    Sara says: "A fun read"
    "Nice blend of different genres"
    Overall

This book was just fun to listen to. It's full of humor and Victorian history with a little science fiction thrown in. The reader is great. You forget that it's one person doing all the voices.

    • Narrated By Roger Mueller

Mackenzie Allen Philips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare.

    "Tear Jerker"
    Overall

I enjoyed the book despite the fact that it was a tear jerker. I usually don't enjoy stories that are very sad. I certainly don't like the violent details that many authors seem to enjoy in some sick way. The plot of "The Shack" centers around a violent incident but the violence is not the emphasis and this book avoids the violent details admirably.

I did feel that the second half of the book seemed a little "off" which I can't explain without giving away too much. It does provide a nice image of God to ponder and compare to your own image of God.

After 12,000 years, the once-supreme Galactic Empire was plunging into a future of barbarism and warfare. All knowledge previously created by mankind faced destruction. Only Hari Seldon, creator of the revolutionary science of psychohistory, foresaw the dark age of ignorance that was to come, and set out to preserve knowledge and mankind itself.

    Colin says: "Stop read"
    "Disappointingly abridged"
    Overall

I failed to see that this book was abridged when I purchased it. What a disappointment! I had read this book years ago and was looking forward to the re-read. The abridgment removed the suspense and depth of the original. I would consider the Foundation series a science-fiction classic. I highly recommend the series but find the unabridged version.
