Mixing a bit of seventeenth-century French history with a great deal of invention, Alexandre Dumas tells the tale of young D'Artagnan and his musketeer comrades, Porthos, Athos, and Aramis. Together they fight to foil the schemes of the brilliant, dangerous Cardinal Richelieu, who pretends to support the king while plotting to advance his own power. Bursting with swirling swordplay, swooning romance, and unforgettable figures.

It took me a little while to get into the story and narrator. After a few chapters, I became fully engaged in the characters and story. The narrator was very good, and did different voices a bit. There are many French names and phrases, all of which were overly pronounced by the narrator. I found that initially distracting, and is not true to the original work, which would not have had constant shifts in language. But it soon became routine and easily ignored. The story itself was quite interesting, and had plenty of action, intrigue, romance, and humor. The historical setting was also very interesting. I'm very glad to have now experienced this classic work.

The Godfather is an extraordinary novel which has become a modern-day classic. Puzo pulls us inside the violent society of the Mafia and its gang wars. The leader, Vito Corleone, is the Godfather. He is a benevolent despot who stops at nothing to gain and hold power.

    Story

Like many, I was familiar with the story from the movie, although it was a bit foggy.

It took me a little while to get used to the narration and the full cast, but after the first or second section, I was really enjoying it. The main cast was very good. A few of the very minor characters weren't acted as well or over-acted, but were quickly gone.

The story was, of course, more fleshed out than the movie. Quite adult in tone and details. Not for the faint of heart!

    Highly recommended.

Set in familiar Steinbeck territory, To a God Unknown is a mystical tale, exploring one man's attempt to control the forces of nature and, ultimately, to understand the ways of God.

I've recently read and listened to most of Steinbeck's major works, and now want to work through his lesser known works.

To a God Unknown was a good story. The subject matter and themes were interesting to me, so that probably helped my appreciation of it all. While this book definitely isn't as good as his other pieces, it was interesting to see all the hints of things to come.

Jonathan Davis did a very good job as the narrator. Very professional and he suited the material very well.

Considered to the be one of most influential American authors, Howard Philip Lovecraft is synonymous with some of the best fantasy and horror fiction of the 20th century, second only to Edgar Allan Poe. Innsmouth is a dilapidated seaside town with secrets as a hybrid race of half-human and half-amphibian creatures worship the gods of Cthulhu and Dagon.

Phil Reynolds did a very nice job on this story. Lovecraft can be hard to read at times, but Reynolds did very well with it. I had already read the story a few years ago, but wanted to experience it again. I'm picky about my narrators, but enjoyed this edition.

It's a great story, and definitely shows Lovecraft at the top of his form. If you have the time, I'd recommend starting with his earlier works and working through them. He is somewhat of an acquired taste.

This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

What about Richard Poe’s performance did you like?

Richard Poe did a great job. Very professional and pleasant all around. He really brought the book to life and his voice suited the material very nicely.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Well, one sitting would be a bit much, but, yes, I was always eager to listen too more.

    Any additional comments?

Glad I was finally able to experience this classic. I've been enjoying Steinbeck lately. I'm new to Audible, and this is the type of book that I'm most interested in: classics with great narration.
