Isaac Asimov crafted an excellent time travel novel that will keep you listening and begging for more with a surprise ending.
The author is absolutely correct about the effects of an Electromagnetic Pulse. But his take on the breakdown of society is purely fiction. It was entertaining and probably will be made into a movie some day, but I'd like to believe there's more good people than bad in the world and we as a society will step up to help our fellow man during a crisis such as this. I think the author has somewhat of an pessimistic, atheistic, agnostic view of the world. And as a practicing Christian, I hope and pray the world never comes to this. Still, "hope" is not a business plan, so I guess I better start stocking up on food, guns, and bullets. Just kidding (or am I?).
This is an outstanding fictional work of history, and the author did an exceptional job making history come alive. My only criticism was the narrator's pronunciation of "forecastle"; having served in the Navy it's pronounced "folk-sal". This comes from the British English pronunciation.
Listen to "Blackout" before you listen to "All Clear". It's the exciting conclusion to "Blackout". The author did extensive research and the book educates you as well as entertains you. I was surprised at how the American author was able to incorporate particular British social norms, idioms, and speach patterns. She must have spent a lot of time in Britain. The plot has a lot of twists and turns and surprises and keeps you guessing until the end. Great book. Well written.
The book started out slow, but latter on I understood why the author built up to the climactic end. Listen to this before you listen to "All Clear". The author did extensive research and the book educates you as well as entertains you. I was surprised at how the American author was able to incorporate particular British social norms, idioms, and speach patterns. She must have spent a lot of time in Britain. Great book.
I'm a fan of short stories and really enjoyed this excellent collection of alternate history short stories. It's an enjoyable read.
I'm such a "Johnny come lately" to "Les Miserables". Only recently did I watch the movie starring Liam Neeson. What an outstanding story Victor Hugo crafted about Justice and Mercy and Redemption as well as the struggle we all have against Social Injustice, the Cruelty of the World, and our own Sensuality and Prejudices. This story will truly inspire you to want to strive to become a better human being. Regardless of how bad a person may be, God can take the worst sinner and transform them into a beautiful saint. This is the story of that very thing: a sinner who became a saint.
As a Navy Veteran, I used to idolize the Navy Seals until I listened to this book by Retired Sgt Major Haney (founding member of the Army's Delta Force). These guys make make the Navy Seals look like a bunch of prima donnas. Navy Seals typically want glory. Delta force are the true unsung heros of our Armed Forces. They keep their identities secret. Even their families don't even know they're in Delta Force. Delta Force is by invitation only and the attrition rate is 95%. They receive tens of millions of dollars worth of training including secret agent training at Camp Perry (aka CIA's Farm) in Williamsburg, VA. They are truly Super Soldiers and Super Spies. They're the best of the best of the best! I'm just glad they're on our side to protect us from all the bad people in the world.
Steven King endorsed this book in the afterwards of his new novel 11-22-63. I'd already listened to this but thought King's novel was a tad bit better.
[saint] Stephen King is at the peak of his writing career. This book has it all: mystery, suspense, horror, action, romance, love, science fiction, history/alternative reality (viz Harry Turtledove). I've never been a fan of Stephen King because I don't like his typical Horror genre, but I've become a fan with this book. It's the best $45 I've ever spent on an audible book and provided me with hours of entertainment.
