At Lyme Regis on the Dorset coast, a young Victorian amateur palaentologist, Charles Smithson, is struck by a solitary figure standing at the far end of the Cobb, staring out to sea. It is Sarah Woodruff, known to the locals as 'poor Tragedy' since her apparent liaison with a French sailor who has since deserted her. Although Charles is already engaged to a young heiress, he is immediately beguiled and eventually infatuated with Sarah.

I chose this when it was on sale, and hadn't seen the movie, but had heard of it, so thought I'd give it a listen. I really didn't enjoy the story...it was complicated, which is OK, but I personally thought it strange that the author inserted himself into the story. And I didn't like the way it ended, which is a personal thing, but ended up feeling disappointed and wishing I had picked a different book. Well, at least now I know...

From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. The Pentagon has officially confirmed more than 150 of Kyles kills (the previous American record was 109), but it has declined to verify the astonishing total number for this book. Iraqi insurgents feared Kyle so much they named him al-Shaitan ("the devil") and placed a bounty on his head.

Loved the story but being from Texas, I felt the narrator missed the mark. The accent annoyed me. We don't drop our G's. Otherwise enjoyed.

Alice Howland is proud of the life she worked so hard to build. At 50 years old, she's a cognitive psychology professor at Harvard and a world-renowned expert in linguistics with a successful husband and three grown children. When she begins to grow disoriented and forgetful, a tragic diagnosis changes her life - and her relationship with her family and the world - forever.

I enjoyed this insight into such a terrible disease. Like Alice, I consider myself to be a bright woman, and so the idea of being afflicted so young was terrifying. However, not long after I began the book I thought, "this narrator is not good" only to check and see that the author was doing narration...sorry, but not a good choice. Really hurt my enjoyment of the book. But the story is compelling and relatable. Definitely gave me something to think about.

After seeing great reviews I chose this book, but honestly couldn't wait for it to be over. Found it to be a little predictable and just not compelling for me at all. I love dogs, but just couldn't get into this one. And the narration was slightly annoying for me as we'll. Too slow (probably because I wanted to get done already).

    F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel of the Roaring Twenties is beloved by generations of readers and stands as his crowning work. This new audio edition, authorized by the Fitzgerald estate, is narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain). Gyllenhaal's performance is a faithful delivery in the voice of Nick Carraway, the Midwesterner turned New York bond salesman, who rents a small house next door to the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby....

Like others, with the new movie coming, and the re-release by narrator Jake Gyllenhaal, I decided to use a credit and re-"read" this classic that I hadn't read since forced to in high school. It was extremely enjoyable and I plowed right through it. I had forgotten what a compelling tale this was and Gyllenhaal's narration only added to my pleasure. Highly recommend!

A Breath of Snow and Ashes continues the saga of 18th-century Scotsman Jamie Fraser and his 20th-century, time-traveling wife, Claire. The year is 1772, and the rift between Britain and its American colonies has put a frightening word into the minds of all concerned: revolution. In the backwoods of North Carolina, violence has already reared its ugly head, as cabins have been burned to the ground. To preserve the colony for King George III, the governor pleads with Jamie to bring the people together and restore peace. But Jamie has the burden of knowing that war cannot be avoided.

This book was far superior to the last one, which drug on and on for me and was the hardest so far to get through. This one really kept my interest and I found myself for the first time in a long time trying to squeeze in more time to listen! Davina Porter, as always, is AMAZING. How one person can be so many distinct voices absolutely confounds me. I am a HUGE fan!

I just finished listening to this book in less than a week (Mon-Fri, no weekends!) which should indicate how much I thoroughly enjoyed it. Johshilyn Jackson's voice was great for this story of three intriguing southern women and their journey to get through their "trouble year". I will definitely be listening to more of Ms. Jackson's books, and recommending to my friends.

Obviously not the greatest book I have ever "read", but definitely enjoyable. Entertaining story. I'm one who has to "read" a book before i can see the movie, if there is one, and so that was behind my decision to buy. I will likely get the next in the series, after I tackle a few longer choices.
