The Shadow of the Torturer is the first volume in the four-volume epic, the tale of a young Severian, an apprentice to the Guild of Torturers on the world called Urth, exiled for committing the ultimate sin of his profession - showing mercy towards his victim.

Gene Wolfe's "The Book of the New Sun" is one of speculative fiction's most-honored series. In a 1998 poll, Locus Magazine rated the series behind only "The Lord of the Rings" and The Hobbit as the greatest fantasy work of all time.

    "Excellent Read!"
    Overall

This is a remarkable book. Well crafted, rich language, delicate narrative. Certainly not filled with slashing heroes or delicate heroines and certainly not for everyone, but then neither is 20 year old scotch. If you enjoy language and the magic of words you will love this book. The narrator does a beautiful job bringing the characters to life...perfection.

The veil to the underworld has been torn, and Rahl, from beyond the veil, begins to summon a sinister power more dreadful than any he has wielded before. Horrifying creatures escape through the torn veil, wreaking havoc on the unsuspecting world above.

Bo Laughlin says: "Great Book - Almost ruined by the narrator"
    "Material rises above the naration."
    Overall

The written narrative is wonderful, in so many ways; great characters, interesting twists, generated tension that binds all of the pieces together. In my mind this is a wonderful example of great fiction, in any genre. That being said this *is* an audible book so the narration is vital. I have been an Audible listener for many years (9 to be exact) and I have listened to a lot of narration, add to that that I was a professional actor for over 30 years, I have listened to a lot of voice. I have to say I am shocked at the poor quality of the narration. His interpretation is simplistic, his characterization tedious, his rhythm predictable and amateurish. The material rises above the narration but I think its a shame the producers selected this narrator to continue the series, very poor choice.

Kadan Montague - a genetically enhanced warrior - is called back from an important assignment in Europe to investigate a series of brutal murders. The suspect is a fellow GhostWalker and, if he isn't found, the entire GhostWalker program will be swept under the carpet, putting the lives of Kadan and all other GhostWalkers in jeopardy. Kadan turns to Tansy Meadows, an elite tracker, to help him hunt down the killer before he can strike again.

    "Sophmoric Sexuality Stifles Story"
    Overall

I enjoyed the opening scene, and the narrator had a delightful edginess that moved the story forward, but the relentless, inconsequential, silly sex scenes disrupted the narrative. I wanted to fast-forward through them to the story but found there was so much of it that I kept bumping into the next sex scene! I have been an Audible member for over 8 years and have 200 books (give or take) in my library, this is the first one that I felt was a real waste of money. If you want a good high-tech thriller, there are *a lot* that are better, if you want erotica you would have to search for a long time to find one worse; the sex scenes were misogynistic, trite, repetitive, and ultimately boring. Two stars was generous in my view, I liked the base concept and enjoyed what the author did with the genetic enhancement plot string otherwise I would have given this book 1 star. Don't waste your money or credits on this selection, there are much better to be found.
