When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Casual Vacancy to be better than the print version?

I really enjoyed the narration and preferred it over the print version.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Casual Vacancy?

Most memorable moment for me was when all the different life stories linked.

What does Tom Hollander bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    British Accent.

Who was the most memorable character of The Casual Vacancy and why?

Crystal, because she could have been a success story and it was sad that she committed suicide. The system failed her and her brother.

    Any additional comments?

Harry Potter never captured my interest. I purchased this book because of the narrator sample and was pleasantly surprised when I discovered a well written story. I read the other comments and I do believe, you have to have lived in the UK and be familiar with their current social struggles to get into this story. Not to be disrespectful, but most Americans are very unfamiliar with other countries, their customs, politics and social issues.

Yet at the end of the day, they face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle: fatherhood. While they consistently give their best on the job, good enough seems to be all they can muster as dads. But they’re quickly discovering that their standard is missing the mark. They know that God desires to turn the hearts of fathers to their children, but their children are beginning to drift....

Would you try another book from the authors and/or Roger Mueller?

Absolutely not. It is poorly written, the music openings for each chapter make it sound like a low budget movie. The preaching is tiresome. If you have trouble falling asleep, this might be for you.

What do you think your next listen will be?

    not sure, possibly "Ireland"

Would you be willing to try another one of Roger Mueller’s performances?

    no

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment

    Any additional comments?

I wish there was an easy way to get a credit back for books such as this.

When young Clara Simon quit her job in Ernest Maxwell Abbott's law firm over his increasingly shabby treatment of Jewish clients, she soon realized the seriousness of her actions. Giving up any job in post-WWI London meant taking a chance. Clara knew her family at 21 Aldgate would not be supportive. A coincidental meeting resulted in a job offer in Chelsea. Clara, reluctant to consider venturing into affluent Chelsea, finally agreed to meet with the important French artist, Paul Maze, who needed an assistant to help write his memoir. Their working relationship ignited a passionate love.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No, I would not unless I knew the person was familiar with European history.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Her voice was not appropriate for male characters and her foreign accents left a lot to be desired.

If you could take any character from 21 Aldgate out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Paul, because he sounds like he has a lot of interesting stories to tell.

    Any additional comments?

I think I would have enjoyed reading the boom more than listening to the audio version.

Imagine that your husband wrote you a letter, to be opened after his death. Imagine, too, that the letter contains his deepest, darkest secret - something with the potential to destroy not just the life you built together, but the lives of others as well. Imagine, then, that you stumble across that letter while your husband is still very much alive....

What did you love best about The Husband's Secret?

I am working overseas for several months and my job is very hard on my eyes. Audio books are a life saver to get through the lonely evenings. Needless to say, I have gone through many books since August.
This is one of the very best books and I couldn't wait to get back to the B&B and plug in my headphones. Amazing story, great reader and so many life lessons all wrapped up in what seems an ordinary life story. This could happen to anyone.
I just ordered another one of her books.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Husband's Secret?

When she finally read the letter

What does Caroline Lee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She brings the characters to life

If you’ve listened to books by Adam Mitzner before, how does this one compare?

    First time

What didn’t you like about Kevin T. Collins’s performance?

    Nothing

Do you think A Case of Redemption needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

It's not the dead that seem strange to Quirke. It's the living. One night, after a few drinks at an office party, Quirke shuffles down into the morgue where he works and finds his brother-in-law, Malachy, altering a file he has no business even reading. Odd enough in itself to find Malachy there, but the next morning, when the haze has lifted, it looks an awful lot like his brother-in-law, the esteemed doctor, was in fact tampering with a corpse, and concealing the cause of death.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I think a person who enjoys reading books along the lines of Harlequin Romance novels may enjoy this.

Has Christine Falls turned you off from other books in this genre?

I will continue reading books in this genre but would not attempt to make it through another book by this author.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Timothy Dalton?

Timothy Dalton did the best he could with the material he was given. I don't think the narrator is the problem here.

What character would you cut from Christine Falls?

    Andy, Claire, Phoebe

    Any additional comments?

I am an avid audio book listener but this one was very disappointing. I wanted to like it since I love Ireland but the story bordered on silly and it the storyline was too predictable.

She arrives at Tyneford, the great house on the bay, where servants polish silver and serve drinks on the lawn. But war is coming, and the world is changing. When Kit, the son of Tyneford’s master, returns home, he and Elise strike up an unlikely friendship that will transform Tyneford - and Elise - forever. An irresistible World War II story of a forbidden romance in a great English country house.

What would have made The House at Tyneford better?

    A less predictable story line.

What was most disappointing about Natasha Solomons’s story?

It bordered on cheap Romance novel

What aspect of Justine Eyre’s performance would you have changed?

Naration was the best part of the book, so I wouldn't change anything.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The House at Tyneford?

I would have cut at least half. It was long and therefore became boring.

    Any additional comments?

I purchased the book based on the narrator. I would not buy another book by this author.

Military working dogs gained widespread attention after Cairo participated in the SEAL Team 6 mission that led to Osama bin Laden's death. Before that, few civilians realized that dogs served in combat, let alone that they could parachute from thirty thousand feet up. The Dogs of War reveals the amazing range of jobs that our four-legged soldiers now perform, examines the dogs' training and equipment, and sets the record straight on those rumors of titanium teeth.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No, the narrator just makes it so unpleasant.

What other book might you compare The Dogs of War to and why?

Since Tuesday, because it also deals with dogs assisting a soldier.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator made me stop listening to the book. I love the content of the book but will have to read it myself.

Could you see The Dogs of War being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    no

    Any additional comments?

The sample button has been very helpful to me and I now use it before ordering any book. The right narrator does make a difference. I also like that I can search by narrator. This feature caused me to buy several books which I would have probably not considered if it wasn't for the narrator.
