  • Lirael: Daughter of the Clayr

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 43 mins)
    • By Garth Nix
    • Narrated By Tim Curry
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Lirael has never felt like a true daughter of the Clayr. Abandoned by her mother, ignorant of her father's identity, Lirael resembles no one else in her large extended family living in the Clayr's glacier. She doesn't even have the Sight, the ability to See into the present and possibly futures, that is the very birthright of the Clayr.

Jefferson says: "Charter Knows, a Library Can Be a Dangerous Place"
    "A Great Sequel"

If you liked "Sabriel" then "Lireal" is an absolute must. And you may as well download the series finale "Abhorsen" while you're at it because you won't be able to walk away.

Garth Nix delivers another winner and, while I normally don't like it when a man narrates a female point-of-view, I barely notice when it's the remarkable Tim Curry!

  • Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 44 mins)
    • By Mark Kurlansky
    • Narrated By Richard M. Davidson
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Author Mark Kurlansky pleasantly surprised the world with this engaging best-seller that garnered rave reviews from critics and casual readers alike. His subject for this whimsical biography is the codfish, a species remarkable for its influence on humanity. Cod, Kurlansky argues, has driven economic, political, cultural and military thinking for centuries in the lands surrounding the Atlantic Ocean. Nations like England and Germany have waged wars for cod.

    David says: "Informative and fun."
    "Skip the last few chapters"

I really enjoyed this except all the recipes (probably better in the written version). I was set to give this audio book 4 starts until I got to the last few chapters. They seem to be entirely recipes. Left me feeling like the book didn't really conclude and I honestly started skipping ahead until I was at the end.

  • For a Few Demons More

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 5 mins)
    • By Kim Harrison
    • Narrated By Marguerite Gavin
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Despite dating one vampire and living with another, Rachel Morgan has always managed to stay just ahead of trouble...until now. A fiendish serial killer stalks the Hollows, claiming victims across society, and the resulting terror ignites a vicious Inderland gang war. And while the ancient artifact Rachel is hiding may be the key to stopping the murderer, revealing it could also create a battle to the death among the numerous supernatural races that live in and around Cincinnati.

Tanya says: "Another great Rachel Morgan book"
    "Another great Rachel Morgan book"

Note: This is book five in a series and it may be difficult to follow if you have not read the previous titles (which are not available on Audible yet)

That said, the fifth installment of the Rachel Morgan books is excellent! Kim Harrison has a great feel for character and has created a really engaging cast in this series. You really care about what happens to these people, from Rachel herself and her tormented roommate Ivy, to their snarky pixy backup Jenks and Rachel's sexy vampire boyfriend Kisten.

This time around, Rachel has her hands full trying to find out who's killing local werewolves while also providing security for the local drug-lord's wedding, dealing with her old demon nemesis Al and a couple of new demons, running interference between two quarrelling alpha werewolves, avoiding her roommate's jealous girlfriend, and trying to keep the Master Vampire of the city in prison - where she herself put him. On top of all that, she'd like to find time to celebrate her birthday, thank you very much!

The narrator is good at keeping the characters distinct and the pacing is good. There's good action and good sex and a really gripping finale.

I highly recommend this title to anyone already reading the Rachel Morgan series and recommend the series to anyone looking for good, fun paranormal fiction with a strong, endearing female lead.

  • Blood Ties Book One: The Turning

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 2 mins)
    • By Jennifer Armintrout
    • Narrated By Elenna Stauffer

I'm no coward. I want to make that perfectly clear. But after my life turned into a horror movie, I take fear a lot more seriously now. I finally became Dr. Carrie Ames just eight months ago. Then I was attacked in the hospital morgue by a vampire. Just my luck.

    David says: "Meh"

I've read the other reviews and most are spot on about the narrator - every ancillary character is frankly cringe-worthy.

I feel like if I had read this in print it would have been better.

As for the claims of "porn" this book is pretty tame on that front.

  • Abhorsen

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 16 mins)
    • By Garth Nix
    • Narrated By Tim Curry
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Before she went to join Sam and Mogget downstairs, Lirael paused for a moment to look at herself in the tall silver mirror that hung on the wall of her room. The image that faced her bore little resemblance to the Second Assistant Librarian of the Clayr. She saw a warlike and grim young woman, dark hair bound back with a silver cord rather than hanging free to disguise her face. She no longer wore her librarian's waistcoat, and she had a long Nehima at her side rather than a library-issue dagger.

Ethan M. says: "A great conclusion to a wonderful series"
    "Don't Miss This Thrilling Conclusion!"

My only complaint is that it has to end!!!

This series is remarkable on so many levels. Garth Nix is a genius at creating rich, fantastic worlds fraught with gritty emotion and thrilling excitement and this final installment in the "Old Kingdom" series does not disappoint!

The characters are engaging, the story is tight, and Tim Curry is perfect.

    Don't miss this one!

  • The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 6 mins)
    • By Mark Haddon
    • Narrated By Jeff Woodman

Fifteen-year-old Christopher Boone has Asperger's Syndrome, a condition similar to autism. He doesn't like to be touched or meet new people, he cannot make small talk, and he hates the colors brown and yellow. He is a math whiz with a very logical brain who loves solving puzzles that have definite answers.

    Amanda says: "An Unexpected Gift."
    "Simply Excellent"

This audiobook is absolutely exceptional. It's engaging, entertaining, and informative. The author gives remarkable insight into the mind of a boy growing up with an autism-like disorder just as he's about enter a time of crisis. The narrator is equally superb. This is by far the best audiobook I've purchased so far.

  • Exodus: A Story from Haunted - Free Excerpt

    • UNABRIDGED (44 mins)
    • By Chuck Palahniuk
    • Narrated By Kimberly Farr

Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk is a novel made up of stories: twenty-three of them, to be precise. Twenty-three of the most horrifying, hilarious, mind-blowing, stomach-churning tales you'll ever encounter, sometimes all at once. They are told by people who have answered an ad headlined "Writers' Retreat: Abandon Your Life for Three Months", and who are led to believe that here they will leave behind all the distractions of "real life" that are keeping them from creating the masterpiece that is in them.

William says: "A waste of time."
    "Don't Bother"

I'm deleting this immediately. The story, while technically well written, is repulsive, off-putting and not at all believable. I was expecting Horror and I got borderline pedophilia.
