I literally counted down the days until this book came out. The first two had me on the edge of my seat for the 3rd. I have to say I finished this with much disappointment. Chapter after chapter of dwarf politics drug out this book an extra few hundred pages and even if that’s not exactly true it sure felt like it. I just felt like this book didn't follow the direction of excitement like the first two did. More than anything I am very frustrated that it will probably take another year or two for a forth book. Don't get me wrong Christopher is brilliant I just wish he would finish this story and write spin off books on the untold portions, sort of like Orson Scott Card.

Danny North knew from early childhood that his family was different - and that he was different from them. While his cousins were learning how to create the things that commoners called fairies, ghosts, golems, trolls, werewolves, and other such miracles that were the heritage of the North family, Danny worried that he would never show a talent, never form an "outself"....

His magic system is brilliantly done and well incorporated into his signature coming-of-age epics. He has managed to explain fairytale-fantasy, mythology, religion, space-time continuum, and even the supernatural while somehow managing to seamlessly fold it into the everyday modern life of a 16 year old. Thirty-three years in the making - My hat goes off to one of my very favorite storytellers.

This was the first Robert Jordan book I've listened to. Let me tell you, this set the stage for what looks to be a grand story in the Wheel of Time story series. Very well written and the narration was impeccable. I'm hooked!

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when--or if--it will go away.

I really didn't enjoy this book at all. Perhaps the narrator spoils it because I felt myself cringing at some of his character attempts. It just wasn't up to my Stephen King expectations. If you presented this book to me without telling me about the author I would have to guess that some stoned kid made the whole thing up and got lucky with a publisher. If that description makes no sense buy the book and see for yourself.

This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

Patrick Rothfuss has some very unique and interesting ideas on this genre. I was trapped in this story from start to finish. It was a stupendous escape. His play on words and description are some of the best I've ever come across. If you enjoy a deep slow and original story with a refreshing introduction to the genre of myth, magic, adventure, and legend then this is a book for you.

On a side note the Narrator, Nick Podehl, was hands down the best I've come across. This says a lot for someone who listens to 40+ audio books a year. He was on top of his game for this story. Very easy on the ears.

And I can't help but toss in this review: BOOK TWO PLEASE ;-)

Like all of Lynn's books, this one was a phenomenal adventure! Its amazing how she brings you into a world so real you would think she had actually been there. The adventure continues and I was on the edge of every word for this entire story. If your looking to dive into an intense and memorable experience I suggest you open your ears to this adventure!

On a side note to those of you who have listened to the other Nightrunner books: This is Narrated by Adam Danoff who isn't the original narrator of the other 3 books. It takes a bit of getting used to in the beginning. His pronunciation of many of the commonly used words and names are different. Overlook these and just be as grateful as I was to see Audible adding another one of Lynn's Books to the collection.

"Being trapped in a bedroom with a woman is a grand thing. Being trapped in hundreds of bedrooms over two thousand years isn't. And being cursed into a book as a love-slave for eternity can ruin even a Spartan warrior's day. As a love-slave, I know everything about women. How to touch them, how to savor them, and most of all, how to pleasure them. But when I was summoned to fulfill Grace Alexander's sexual fantasies, I found the first woman in history who saw me as a man with a tormented past."

Just like the title of this review its a basic Xena episode drug out. This is not an over statement. Yes the mythology was interesting, but hardly worth the read when you have to deal with the terrible writing style. Maybe it was not a book to listen to and possibly best left read. I felt myself cringe most of the time from the Narrators exaggerations - they were horrible.

I chose to read this from an Orson Scott Card pick. This is a very originally written adventure with a realistic gothic/ghost/dark underline. I am a fan for life. I really feel like Lynn could have easily added 2-3 more books to this Triad. The others to follow are equally amazing.

Packed with examples of people who pursued their goals relentlessly, the book profiles nearly 50 individuals who prevailed against all odds. From the builder of the Brooklyn Bridge to the chemists who invented Post-It notes we meet people like Bessie Coleman, an African-American who had to go to flight school in Paris in order to learn how to fly. But she did, becoming the first woman in America to earn her pilot's license in 1920.

I feel like the narrator really steals the joy and message of this book. Its a bit of a drag to listen to. She's kinda old and drabby sounding and I'm used to the empowering voice of Joyce. I think I'll pass on the audio and perhaps pick up the book instead.
