Really enjoyed this trip down memory lane. This police procedural takes you back to a time before CSI forensics and the "bulls" were the king of the streets and tough as nails. Corruption, abuse, and sex was part of a "bulls" every day life. being nice did not solve crimes. I find McBain's characters to be realistic and not as one dimensional as Elmore Leonard. Light, entertaining stories with a nostalgic flair. I recommend and am in the process of reading "The Mugger".

As a prosecutor in Houston, Penn Cage sent killers to death row. But as mayor of his hometown - Natchez, Mississippi - Penn will face his most dangerous threat. Urged by old friends to try to restore this fading jewel of the Old South, Penn has ridden into office on a tide of support for change. But in its quest for new jobs and fresh money, Natchez has turned to casino gambling, and now five steamboats float on the river beside the old slave market, like props from Gone With the Wind.

Read this book based on the reviews... This book is simply an average mystery, nothing special. Characters are interesting, plot is simplistic, dialogue is amateurish, and the ending is predictable. A good summer beach read, but greatly over rated as far as mysteries go. I was hoping for more, a new series to delve into based on the reviews. I will pass on the sequels... Looking for a quick light read? This is your book!

This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

It is January 1944 - and as Allied troops prepare for D day, Nazi scientists develop a toxic nerve gas that will repel and wipe out any invasion force. To salvage the planned assault, two vastly different but equally determined men are sent to infiltrate the secret concentration camp where the poison gas is being perfected on human subjects. Their only objective: destroy all traces of the gas and the men who created it - no matter how many lives may be lost...including their own.

The plot, characters, and narration are great!!! I can only tell you I really enjoyed this story, and am sad the author gave up this genre for mysteries. The story reached out and grabbed me in with the characters. I empathized with their trial and tribulations and actually got emotional at different parts in the story. I highly recommend this book if you are into historical fiction!!!

Why we think it’s a great listen: A performance so poignant, we gave Bronson Pinchot (yes, Balki from Perfect Strangers) our inaugural Narrator of the Year award.... In the monsoon season of 1968-69 at a fire support base called Matterhorn, located in the remote mountains of Vietnam, a young and ambitious Marine lieutenant wants to command a company to further his civilian political ambitions. But two people stand in his way.

I was in the Marine Corps from 1965 - 1969. this book just did not ring true to me, sorry. Vietnam was a fiasco but I believe certain failures of the leadership were exaggerated to make a political point. The race issue was also something that seemed exploited and exaggerated. The story dragged on, was way too long and repetitive at times. I just thought it was poor overall and don't agree with all the rave reviews... Semper Fi!!!

This novel by Carl Hiaasen, author of Tourist Season and Native Tongue, begins as most thrillers do, with a killing. But this is no everyday, hum-drum, garden variety killing. Our hero, Nick Stranahan, a 42-year-old private investigator who has killed five men and been married five times, skewers his attacker's aorta with the razor-sharp bill of a stuffed marlin.

Most of the world remembers Crazy Horse as a peerless warrior who brought the U.S. Army to its knees at the Battle of Little Bighorn. But to his fellow Lakota Indians, he was a dutiful son and humble fighting man who, with valor, spirit, respect, and unparalleled leadership, fought for his people's land, livelihood, and honor. In this fascinating biography, Joseph Marshall, himself a Lakota Indian, creates a vibrant portrait of the man, his times, and his legacy.

What a pleasant surprise and lighthearted read!!! This was a great break away from the traditional mysteries and thrillers. A comical look at the sleaze bars, sleaze politicians, and the topless dancers who live in that world. At times you caught yourself laughing out loud and then empathy for the victims... I enjoyed this read and will find the time in the future to take another break from serious and somber world of the traditional thrillers... Recommend this book highly if you need a good summer read or a change of pace. Just don't take it too seriously. Go with it and enjoy!!!

An anonymous young woman murdered in a run-down hotel, all identifying characteristics dissolved by acid. A father publicly beheaded in the blistering heat of a Saudi Arabian public square. A notorious Syrian biotech expert found eyeless in a Damascus junkyard. Smoldering human remains on a remote mountainside in Afghanistan. A flawless plot to commit an appalling crime against humanity.

I have had several urges to abandon this book in the first 200 pages... The author's style is IMHO disruptive to the flow of the plot.
I feel as though I am reading a biography not a mystery/thriller. So far all we have in 200 pages is character development gone overboard! I keep on reading because of all the positive reviews, but so far I bored to death at the pace of this novel. My early opinion is this novel could of been 400 pages instead of 600 depending on the rest of the story... Not impressed!!!

UPDATE... I can't take it anymore.... To much pointless narrative. Every time I think the author is going to NOW get to the meat he goes off on some tangent. Example some guy so terrified he craps his pants and gets an erection at the same time, explained to ad nauseam..... HUH!!! He over states 9/11, like we all don't know what that meant to us all. It seems to me he has an ideology he is trying to convey and spends too much of the narrative portraying his beliefs. The premise of the book held great promise but the authors style and poor editing make it a struggle to finish. The book could have been edited and the story tightened to a great novel of about 350 pages instead of the 600 pages of meaningless narrative. 240 pages to start of trite dialog, the never-ending,and unnecessary background. As one reviewer stated "But over 1,400 five star reviews? Easily explained. Green Acres and Gilligan's Island are still one of the most watched TV shows in history." I can't recommend this anyone...

In this first novel by Agatha Christie, she introduces the inimitable Hercule Poirot, who would go on to appear in 33 Christie novels and 54 short stories. Outside of Sherlock Holmes and perhaps Philip Marlowe, he is the best-known detective in the history of the genre. The Mysterious Affair at Styles deals with the case of an old woman poisoned with strychnine for her money. Nothing is obvious, however, in the way Christie handles a plot.
