When Marissa is found brutally murdered, with her young daughter, Haley, resting her head on her mother's bloody breast, she sends the idyllic California town of Oak Knoll into a tailspin. Already on edge with the upcoming trial of the See- No-Evil killer, residents are shocked by reports of the crime scene, which might not have been discovered for days had it not been for a chilling 911 call: a small child's voice saying, "My daddy hurt my mommy."

I read the first 6 novels of this series back in the 90s. Why I stopped, don't know, but a recent reviewer I follow had a similar story and he started to reread the series and had nothing but the best to say about the author and the series. So as I looked back I could only remember the story line of "Black Echo" nothing else. I then started with the 2nd novel "Black Ice" and was blown away by the quality of this police procedural! The characters, the location, the mystery, all combine to create a story that never allowed me to lose interest. I could not wait to get back and read more. The personalities, the human frailty, characters that are real; no super human powers here... Dick hill is beyond excellent, he brings Harry Bosch alive! I have purchased the next novel in the series and can't wait to get started!

A troubled World War I veteran races across the frozen steppe of 1930's Ukraine to save a child from a shadowy killer with unthinkable plans. Luka is a war veteran who now wants nothing more than to have a quiet life with his family. His village has, so far, remained hidden from the advancing Soviet brutality. But everything changes the day a stranger arrives, pulling a sled bearing a terrible cargo. In the chaos, a little girl has vanished, and Luka is the only man with the skills to find the stolen child and her kidnapper.

FIVE STARS!!!!! I don't give a 5 star rating easily but this novel is a gem that I enjoyed, marveled over, took pearls of wisdom about life from, and was sad to see it end. I can tell you without ant hesitation that this is one of the best books I have listed to and read!!!~ (immersion reading) Characters, plot, location, you name it and it was all there. I am not going to go into detail about the specifics, but to say read all the positive reviews and believe what they say. I was sad to see this book end, but the characters and events will stay with me. To me that is the sign of a meaningful novel that is well told. Narration is excellent after I had it play a 1.5 time. The original speed was a little too slow for me. Other than that read it!!!!

It is a society that is, officially, a paradise. Superior to the decadent West, Stalin's Soviet Union is a haven for its citizens, providing for all of their needs: education, health care, security. In exchange, all that is required is their hard work, and their loyalty and faith to the Soviet State. But now a murderer is on the loose.

The Lonesome Gods is Louis L'Amour's biggest and most important historical novel to date, a sweeping adventure of the California frontier. Here is the fascinating story of Johannes Verne, a young man left to die by his vengeful grandfather, rescued by outlaws and raised in part by the Indians of the desert.

Too much philosophy not enough action... The story drags on and the constant philosophy lessons take away from the main storyline. Boring, drawn out, just a 500 plus page book that should have been 300 pages!

Cash McLendon has always had an instinct for self-preservation, one that was honed by an impoverished childhood and life with an alcoholic father barely scraping by on the streets of Saint Louis in 1872. He’s always had a knack for finding and capitalizing on the slightest opportunities, choosing the path of financial security over happiness or real friends. He eventually builds himself up from a Saint Louis street urchin to the son-in-law and heir apparent to industrial mogul Rupert Douglass. Though it lacks passion, his life seems securely set: a wife, a career, property, standing.

I read this entire novel and enjoyed it immensely, great story, great characters, super narration!!! Then why the 1 star overall rating??? The ending was horrible, leaves you feeling unfulfilled, and leaves you flat!!! Too many unanswered questions, a sequel probably, but I don't appreciate an author who baits you by leaving so many unanswered questions into buying his next book... Sad because this book has great dialogue, and you relate with the characters, good story, but the ending is so bad that I feel I wasted my time... Think twice before you consider this novel...

In 1919, Delano, Georgia, appoints its first chief of police. Honest and hardworking, the new chief is puzzled when young men start to disappear. But his investigation is ended by the fatal blast from a shotgun. Delano's second chief-of-police is no hero, yet he is also disturbed by what he sees in the missing-persons bulletins. In 1969, when Delano's third chief takes over, the unsolved disappearances still haunt the police files.

This novel exudes the personality of a small southern Georgia town on a slow, hot, humid, August day. The narrator is fantastic in his portrayal of the characters and adds to the feeling of being a part of this southern town. Characters are interesting and the author did a great job in developing each one. This is just a great "yarn" that made for an enjoyable experience. I enjoyed the book and recommend it if you are not looking for Jack Reacher exploits. It is a Georgia Peach that goes well with a mint julep...

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?"

Then it became repetitious in that it just became one problem after another and just too much wasted info. Skimming became the norm, sad to say. This book just failed to hold my attention. The ending was flat...
