"Lord of The Rings?"
OK, So I realized that this erotic journey would be a little far fetched, but come on! The beginning was by far the most erotic portion of the book because of the build up. As the book was at its climax...no pun intended, I was ready for it to be over. I think the author jumped the proverbial shark with the seduction of au pair Gretchen. I did like, however, the narrator. Natasha Wolfe has a pleasing voice and did a good job with the character voicing.
"A nice surprise unfolded before me"
I've had this book in my wish list for quite some time and I finally made the decision to buy it. I was more than surprised when I started listening and low and behold one of my favorite authors, Augusten Burroughs, had written the forward. Augusten authored "Running with Scissors" a highly recommended memoir. I was even more surprised to find out that this book was written by his brother. Unlike his brother, John Robison lacked the talent to craft his story into a mesmerizing account of his childhood, but John's story was raw, entertaining, educational, and down right fun! I enjoyed it immensely. I would highly recommend listeniong to this book and the accounts of John Robison as he grows from a boy with Aspergers into a man that is nothing more than a genious. I would also recommend that you read "Running with Scissors" first. Only then could you truly understand the household that these boys grew up in and a perspective of childhood that few of us had to endure...luckily.
"Not "Unbroken" but not bad"
I listened to this book after listening to "Unbroken". Much of what I 've learned about how and why the Japanese treated their prisoners of war was attributed to the book Unbroken. This book lacked the raw power that Unbroken did, but it managed to tell the horrible story of the Battan Death March. I would recommend the book Unbroken first, then this listen next. You will get the whole story of WWII POW's in Japan.
"This Needs to Be Made Into A Major Motion Picture"
A captivating story that had me checking the history books to make sure the end of the war was coming soon so this poor man (Louis Zamperini ) would be saved. This book should certainly be made into a motion picture. Personally, I believe it would be better than "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers". It is amazing to me how someones will to survive can endure such hardships. I am not sure I would be able to survive this tale. Best of all, it is a true story!
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in WWII and the human spirit.
I just checked Google: EXCLUSIVE: Universal Pictures has acquired screen rights to Laura Hillenbrand’s bestselling new book Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption.
I CANT WAIT!!!!
You should listen to this book BEFORE the movie comes out!
"IT WAS LIKE HAVING RED ANTS IN MY EYES!"
I thought all of the hype regarding the hit Broadway musical meant that this book was going to be enjoyable, but it was far from it. My family has planned a trip to NYC to see the play in November so I thought that listening to the book before hand would give me a different perspective on the musical. I have heard that the musical is outstanding and have read reviews that the book that don't come close to even being enjoyable, but it wasn't until I experienced it first hand did I realize how brutal this book could be! The story unfolds very slowly and up until the end is uneventful. I couldn't wait for this story to end, and even though I knew the ending, it was still a disappointment.
I just hope that the $600.00 I spent on tickets to the Broadway show is not a disappointment.
"Gut Wrenching"
This audio book narrated by the author, Jaycee Dugard, takes you into a nightmarish world that had me thinking, "This can't be real!" However, it was real, and hearing the story in Jaycee's own voice gave the book much more depth. What I liked most about the writing is that in the early chapters the writing was of a child. As the story unfolds the writing grows with the author. There is much to learn from her experience and the one thing I have learned is that if ever placed in a position where I had to remain hopeful of a loved one returning home one day, I would never give up that hope.
The story had me sick to my stomach at times, cheering for her when she was reunited with her family, and even had a tear or two for her while listening to her story of her struggle to survive.
"Give Becca Battoe a Break!"
I was almost persuaded from what I've read of the reviews of Becca Battoe's narration to not download this audio book. Although I would say that she is not the most gifted narrator with the male voicings, she did an excellent job with all of the female voices including the main character. Her voice was spot on to a 22 year old femail graduating college.
The story, on the other hand is pure fantasy. A 29 year old man, perfectly good looking, thick head of hair, smart as a whip, perfect body definition, well endowed, multi billionare, owns and pilots his own helicopter and private jet, knows how to please a woman, is CEO of an international firm, etc...
I don't understand how the reviews for this book dwelled on how badly Becca narrated and not how poorly it was written.
The book was just alright in my opinion.
I would, however, listen to another book narrated by Becca Battoe.
"Outstanding Audio Book"
This is (to date) the best audio book experience I've ever had. The narration is outstanding!
The story is great, but the narrators really make the book come alive in your mind.
Did I mention that the narration is excellent?
I highly recommend it.
"A memoir that reads like a novel"
This is a coming of age story in a small West Virginia coal mining town. Not only does the author captivate you with his childhood story, he makes you applaud his and his friends accomplishments with amateur rocketry. His passion and imagination takes him to the stars. A great story showing that with a lot of passion and support, one can do anything in life. Except for his singing, the narrator did a good job. I think he would have been better off reading the lyrics.
"A must for any King fan"
The Stand is an American Classic and thanks to Audible it is the must listen book of 2012. I've been waiting 20 years to re-read this book. The narrator does a great job except for Tom Cullen's voice. Maybe seeing the movie put a visual/audio of the characters in my head.
Overall audible did a great job with a classic.
"Becca Battoe would have been the perfect Narrator"
A very good book, however the narrator seemed a bit old compared to the character in the book. From the reviews I've read about 50 shades of Grey, Becca Battoe should have switched the narrative with Suzanne Collins, Oh well! I guess you can't have everything. Overall a great book. I will definitely continue with the series.
