"Excellent story, horrible narration"
I was so sad when I heard the narration for this wonderfully intriguing and fun novel... It is monotone and slow. The story is great, I recommend reading this series instead of listening to it.
"Sad its over..."
A fun, suspenseful, romantic, and well-written novel with a good narrator. Listened to it much too fast, kept finding reasons to listen...better do another load of laundry or dishes :-)
The characters are semi-rip offs of Bones and Booth (especially Bones) from the TV show Bones, but as I love that show, it didn't bother me at all and the story is very different.
Good listen, highly recommend!
"Surprised at how many GOOD reviews this book got!"
I found the characters and the dialogue absolutely horrid. Immature, annoying, stupid dialogue, it was very hard to get past. The characters were silly and shallow most of the time, or suddenly incredibly romantic and out of character. It was just not very well written. Not a favorite of mine.
On the plus side, the 'intimate' scenes were written well....
"Great narration"
This was a well told story with two great narrators...which narration makes or breaks the audio-book experience, in my opinion. I liked jumping back and forth between older Jacob and younger Jacob. Just as a warning, there is some animal abuse described in this book... the love story is a bit underdeveloped (you just kind of assume from their limited interactions that they have fallen in love) but all the characters and the lives of people working in a circus were brought to life very well. The story is good just could have used a tiny bit more development between the main two characters but other than that it was great and I enjoyed listening to it!
"meh"
I was just looking for a quick little romance novel... and I know and expect the 'romance' formula so that wasn't what bothered me. For starters, the characters were irritating, especially the female heroine... She just couldn't shut up about her 'books' - which became annoying after awhile, especially since it was promised to her that she could keep writing them.... For another, the first time they experience a little passion, it went too far too fast without any buildup...and then the next time it happened at the pond it lacked any kind of heat ... Next, they get married and she hires someone at her wedding to spy on her husband? Kind of ridiculous, she doesn't even give him a chance to be a husband before she's spying on him... The beginning had promise but it became more annoying as it went along. Not worth a credit in my opinion
"Great story, amazing narration"
Beyond the wonderful, gripping, and addicting story and characters that Diana Gabaldon has created is the amazing find of Davina Porter! She is the best narrator I have ever listened to, has great accents and breathes life into each and every character.
The story is great... a bit too graphic in it's violent description of a rape/torture scene at the end of the book... but the rest of the book is too good for that to make me dislike the story entirely. The main characters are very well developed and you find you just have to follow them throughout the series to see what happens to them next...
