    "Great for the Road"
    Overall

We downloaded this for a Thanksgiving week 1600 mile road trip with a four and two year old. I thought they wouldn't enjoy the stories without the pictures in front of them, but they couldn't get enough. Definitely helped to fill the time, and entertained the adults enough, too.

No, it's not a substitute for the books with pictures, but definitely worth it for travel. Also a good value for the number of books on this program.

All children mythologize their birth... So begins the prologue of reclusive author Vida Winter's beloved collection of stories, long famous for the mystery of the missing thirteenth tale. The enigmatic Winter has always kept her violent and tragic past a secret. Now old and ailing, she summons a biographer to tell the truth about her extraordinary life: Margaret Lea, a young woman for whom the secret of her own birth remains an ever-present pain.

The narration of this is excellent; I was hooked and stayed up too late more than once listening. I enjoyed the story a great deal, too, although in retrospect there are things I could quibble about in it.

Curiously, I'm not sure I would have been as engrossed by the print version. Anyway, I strongly recommend the download if it sounds at all interesting to you.
