I have a very solitary job, so I have quite a few hours to listen to books every week. I try to rate this books fairly, as I hate the 1 star or 5 star trend. 5 stars shall be reserved for the best of the best. 3 stars is still a good book to me.

In Unfamiliar Fishes, Sarah Vowell argues that 1898 might be a year just as crucial to our nation's identity, a year when, in an orgy of imperialism, the United States annexed Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Guam, and invaded Cuba and then the Philippines, becoming a meddling, self-serving, militaristic international superpower practically overnight. Of all the countries the United States invaded or colonized in 1898, Vowell considers the story of the Americanization of Hawaii to be the most intriguing.

Why we think it’s a great listen: It’s easy to say that when it comes to sci-fi you either love it or you hate it. But with Ender’s Game, it seems to be you either love it or you love it.... The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Enter Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, the result of decades of genetic experimentation.

If you could sum up Ender's Game in three words, what would they be?

    Magnificent

What was one of the most memorable moments of Ender's Game?

While a strong book from the start, this book really starts to take off around the midpoint.

Which character – as performed by Stefan Rudnicki and Harlan Ellison – was your favorite?

All of the characters are fully fleshed, and the performances are magnificent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely, I did it in two. One awesome road trip, I hardly noticed the drive.

    Any additional comments?

This book would have done well in any form. The characters are so compelling, they could have carried the story as a fantasy novel, or any other branch of fiction.

The year is 2380. The Intersolar Commonwealth, a sphere of stars some 400 light-years in diameter, contains more than 600 worlds, interconnected by a web of transport "tunnels" known as wormholes. At the farthest edge of the Commonwealth, astronomer Dudley Bose observes the impossible: Over 1,000 light-years away, a star...vanishes. It does not go supernova. It does not collapse into a black hole. It simply disappears.

Where does Pandora's Star rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    Top tier

What was one of the most memorable moments of Pandora's Star?

Not sure why, but I really enjoyed how fleshed out the back story on MorningLightMountain.
Peter Hamilton lays just enough of a foundation for each of the players to let you know what they are about without it being exhausting. I also enjoyed Ozzie's journey.

    Which scene was your favorite?

    Perhaps When Ozzie Meets Tochee.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, all 40 some odd hours. If I could stay awake that long, I could listen to this book straight through.

Um, it's Anthony Bourdain, reading Anthony Bourdain. I guess he nailed it

Could you see Kitchen Confidential being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

of course, and Anthony Bourdain should be played by Anthony Bourdain

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, Ready Player One is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

Would you consider the audio edition of Ready Player One to be better than the print version?

I don't know if it is better or not, but it's quite good. Wil Wheaton adds a lot to this story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hard decision. All of the characters are great.

Which character – as performed by Wil Wheaton – was your favorite?

Wade Watts, I'm pretty sure that a few pages into writing this book, Ernie Cline knew exactly who was going to read it.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No crying involved, definitely some laughing, and a bit of heart racing.

    Any additional comments?

I'm probably quite biased in this as this book is so far up my alley. It really makes me miss the whole Saturdays I could waste in an arcade.

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Absolutely time well spent, fun little story for anyone who was ever into Star Trek. And read by a star trek alum, and king of the geeks Wil Wheaton.

Did Wil Wheaton do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Wil is no Jim Dale, but he does a great job.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    Yes
