I'm hoping that this book lost something on the way to becoming an audiobook because I thought this was a train wreck. Yes, there are some great tips on developing jokes and a stand-up routine but its lost in a bunch of boring narration by the author....stuff that could be easily skipped over in a book format.
I think part of the problem probably lies in the fact that you can't teach humor. You have to have it...you can't fake it. But the author seems to think he can teach ANYONE to write jokes so he spends an inordinate amount of time on the minutia and repeating things.
This book would have been better if he had assumed that people had some clue regarding joke development. Or maybe 1 guide for humorless and one advanced guide for people that already knew a little about being funny.
Instead, this book is only marginally effective, especially in audio format. I couldn't finish it - I was sick of the pace, or lack thereof.
I was expecting more humor but instead he just drags on and on about boring little anecdotal stuff. The first couple of chapters were funny and I was patting myself on the back for another good purchase. But then he ran out of material. The bulk of the book felt like he was just babbling into a recorder to fill up the rest of the book. Sure, anyone that writes a book like this is already a little self centered but he pushed right past that into totally self indulgent and self centered. I don't care about the little crap that is bouncing around in your head or the reason you do the things you do. I'm here for COMEDY and HUMOR. After about 1/3 of the book I honestly couldn't listen to him any more. And why in the world would you berate people for listening to the audiobook ON THE AUDIOBOOK?
Not many authors should be reading their own books - Gaiman is an exception.
I don't normally care for this type of novel but I'll have to say that this one sucked me in and I found myself looking forward to my next drive so that I could hear more. I listened to it after incessant badgering by a friend and she was right - this was a great book.
I will definitely put more Gaiman books on my wish list!
