The most fundamental questions about the origins of the universe and of life itself, once the province of philosophy, now occupy the territory where scientists, philosophers, and theologians meet—if only to disagree. In their new book, Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow present the most recent scientific thinking about the mysteries of the universe, in nontechnical language marked by both brilliance and simplicity.

Brandi says: "Hawking succeeds in mind-blowing physics, real"
"A GREAT book but not purely science"
    Overall

I thoroughly enjoyed the journey that this book took me on. It was a great overview of a lot of physics that I already knew through many other readings, but also a great lesson in the history of man's knowledge about the world and universe we live in. While the authors do overextend themselves to a realm outside of physics when trying to declare the lack of need of God, I share their belief so I appreciated their conclusions. There will be many knocks on this book for stepping outside their box, but that WAS their point. While this is a science book written by physicists, it is also their take on the question of the origin of life, the universe, and everything. Just read the title, it's not called "How Physics Explains the Universe".

Heir to the Empire begins five years after Return of the Jedi. The Rebel Alliance has destroyed the Death Star, defeated Darth Vader and the Emperor, and driven the remnants of the old Imperial Starfleet back into a quarter of the territory it once controlled. But thousands of light-years away, the last of the Emperor's warlords have taken command of the remains of the Imperial fleet - and have made two vital discoveries that could destroy the fragile new Republic.

Cheryl says: "Good, but why waste time creating abridged books?"
    "Enjoyable Few Hours"
    Overall

While I do not usually go for abridged editions, I really wanted the story presented here and I've had no time to read the print book myself.

As far as abridged books go, this book is very well presented as more of a one-man audio drama, with the majority of the audio being composed of dialog rather than the nice the detail the unabridged book most likely has. So, what you get here is the meat of the story with very little elaboration. It's almost like listening to another Star Wars movie. On that level, the audio does a very good job of conveying a story and giving you enough information to visualize the scene and what's going on.

The story here is very good and presents new features of the Star Wars universe that we were not exposed to in the films. The new characters presented here go on to play major parts in the Star Wars expanded universe, so this is a must read before going forward in the main Star Wars story line.

Overall, it was an enjoyable 3 hours and I'm looking forward to the day that I can sit down and read the complete work. I'm now moving on to the second book to see where the story goes from here. Keep in mind that this is only the first part of a three-part story.
