  • The Murders of Richard III: A Jacqueline Kirby Mystery

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 51 mins)
    • By Elizabeth Peters
    • Narrated By Grace Conlin
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When attractive American Jacqueline Kirby is invited to an English country mansion for a weekend costume affair, she expects only one mystery. Since the hosts and guests are all fanatic devotees of King Richard III, they hope to clear his name of the 500-year-old accusation that he killed the little princes in the Tower of London. Jacqueline is amused by the group's eccentricities until history begins to repeat itself.

    James says: "Good for driving"
"If you like Peters stay away"

I you have read/heard other books by E.Peters you will be sorely disappointed.
While the book itsself is entertaining and maybe even a fun listen, it in now way lives up to the expectations placed upon it by the authors name. For most authors this would be a laudable book; for Peters it's at best an embarassment.

  • Equal Rites: Discworld, Book 3

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 47 mins)
    • By Terry Pratchett
    • Narrated By Celia Imrie

Right before the wise old wizard Drum Billet died, he passed on his magical staff of power to the newborn eighth son of an eighth son. Unfortunately, Drum Billet never bothered to check the gender of the newborn baby, and it turns out it was a girl. Now his chauvinistic colleagues are forced to deal with a young girl who has all the qualifications to join their all-male profession.

    Ryan says: "Entertaining!"
"Stay away! The audio quality is horrid!"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I absolutely love Terry Pratchett and was excited to hear this book. I can't judge it really other than to say I could not listen for more than 5 minutes.

The audio quality is so incredibly bad (worse than anything I have ever experienced on audible) that I could not continue to listen.

So if you value your ears, stay away!

Who was your favorite character and why?

What didn’t you like about Celia Imrie’s performance?

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Equal Rites?

    Any additional comments?

  • The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 55 mins)
    • By Molly Harper
    • Narrated By Amanda Ronconi
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Iris Scanlon, Half-Moon Hollow's only daytime vampire concierge, knows more about the undead than she'd like. Running all their daylight errands - from letting in the plumber to picking up some chilled O neg - gives her a look at the not-so-glamorous side of vampire life. Her rules are strict; relationships with vamps are strictly business, not friendship - and certainly not anything else. But then she finds her newest client, Cal, poisoned on his kitchen floor, and only Iris can help.

yasmine32068 says: "Once again this should have disclaimers"
    "A lovely story hillariously told"

This was the last of Molly Harpers Vampire related books I have read. Like the ones before it left me wanting more. Sadly the supply of fresh tales by Harper is limited.

    Here some tips:

    * Do NOT consume beverages while listening. You and your environment will end up wearing them.
    * Do NOT drive or operate machinery while listening. Tears of laughter do no enhance vision.

  • 666 Park Avenue

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 28 mins)
    • By Gabriella Pierce
    • Narrated By Ilyana Kadushin
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

What if your mother-in-law turned out to be an evil, cold-blooded witch... literally? Ever since fabulously wealthy Malcolm Doran walked into her life and swept her off her feet, fledgling architect Jane Boyle has been living a fairy tale. When he proposes with a stunning diamond to seal the deal, Jane can't believe her incredible luck and decides to leave her Paris-based job to make a new start with Malcolm in New York....

Shar says: "Loved it! Fun listen, interesting characters."
    "Painful attempt at a novel."
What would have made 666 Park Avenue better?

The story is extremely slow paced, yet it moves you along expecting there to be an actual ending. Well or at least a story to be told.

What was most disappointing about Gabriella Pierce’s story?

The better question would be what did not disappoint. You listen to the story and it keeps you with it expecting something to happen. Anything really. But nothing ever does. There is no ending to the story, no highlights, nothing. It's like a wet dream just after waking up in the morning. You know there is potential in the story and you can imagine an infinite number of twists and turns that would make the experience a pleasurable one. Yet once you are fully awake, it is simply deeply unsatisfying. The story leaves you hanging with tantalizing possibilities without ever resolving to anything. Even if this is just one installment in a series, this story is so badly ended, that you should avoid it at any cost unless you are a deeply masochistic person.

What does Ilyana Kadushin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narration is what kept me listening. It is pleasantly melodious and tantalizing. It takes a horrid attempt at writing a story and imbues it with at least some character. The only reason the narration only gets 4 stars is that it is blatantly dishonest. A bland and uninspired reading of a bland and uninspired story would have been more fitting. My deepest respects to the narrator. She managed to turn this audiobook from water, if not into wine, at least into artificial grape-juice.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from 666 Park Avenue?

About half the novel is fluff and could be cut, but only if it were replaced with something of actual substance, like an actual story line.

  • Slam

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 13 mins)
    • By Nick Hornby
    • Narrated By Nicholas Hoult

Just when everything is coming together for Sam, his girlfriend, Alicia, drops a bombshell. Make that ex-girlfriend: because by the time she tells him she's pregnant, they¿ve already called it quits. Sam does not want to be a teenage dad.

Jody R. Nathan says: "Slam Dunk! Great read!"
    "An amazing book"

This was an amazing book. But as others have remarked: What else would you expect from Hornby?
As a "young" father, albeit double the age of the protagonist, I could so easily relate to this story.
For teenagers this is a "must read". And for anyone out of their teens this is a "have to read".
