I was really looking forward to listening to this book and found it nothing like what I had expected.
The characters were interesting but the story line was predictible and boring. I was looking forward to something on the order of Stephen King's The Stand and was so disappointed. I gave up half way through, to be fair maybe it improved toward the end. I am sad to say I would not recommend this book.
I am interested in the culture of Afghanistan since we are at war in their country. This book provided a nice inside view of the people, particularly the women. I do recommend this book, however the author includes personal information about herself that I found uninteresting and boring. That was my reason for giving it 4* instead of 5. Another book on the same subject is The Bookseller of Kabul, which I liked more.
This is a very funny book. I think it is for people who already know John Waters, so they will not be shocked by his stories. It was so honest and believable even with the crazy people depicted in it. My only fault was that for some reason, my audio download did not have the ending of the book downloaded on it. I plan to call customer service because I could listen to John Waters all day. I suggest you be sure to listen to the sample before buying, because his humor may be offensive to some readers. I however loved it.
This is such a famous book, and is considered a literary masterpiece, so I went into it with high expectations. I'm sorry to say I was let down. I'm not sure why, maybe because I have seen the movie and therefore already knew the story, but it kind of bored me. I didn't become attached to any of the characters, so that could be another reason. I'm assuming most people liked the book, so I would say that you should try it for yourself.
I love Alfre Woodard and that was the reason why I chose this book. The subject matter also appealed to me. Unfortunately, near the beginning of the book there was a description of a pregnant woman's lynching that was so explicit and gruesome that I could not shake it from my mind. I have always been extra sensitive to any depiction of torture, so this may not deter other readers. I have put the book down, but do plan to try it again in a little more time..
I read this book a long time ago and loved it. Listening to the audio reminded me just how great this book is. Hearing only the first chapter is a tease and makes me want to listen to the entire book. Audible would create a new way to appreciate this great book. Highly recommended.
This was my very first audio book and I'm glad to say I had a good experiance with it. For some reason I missed this story on the news, so I went into it with no knowledge of what happened to the author. Needless to say it was shocking. But the true message this book gives is how mentally healthy a person can be after such an ordeal. I have great admiration for how she handled herself both during and after her experience. She is a great model for how a person can go on with life, and thrive, after enduring a terrible experience. I recommend this book.
I love this author and have been reading her books for years. I thought her last one, Bel Canto, was magnificent and thus was very much looking forward to this one. What a disappointment. I thought the story line here started out as quite interesting, but as the book went on I felt like it was getting more and more silly. I initially liked the charactors but I gradually lost interest in them. I still love this author and will read her next book. I thought she missed the mark with this one. Sad to say I do not recommend it.
I had this book on my book shelf for a long time but circuses just didn't look interesting to me. I don't know why but I decided to give it a shot on audio and am so glad I did. I immediately fell in love with the charactors and thought the story line was excellent. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this world I am a picky reader and am very happy to have found such a gem. Highly recommended.
I think this is a very important part of the American story. It is important and a subject I want to know more about. Therefore I was highly looking forward to listening to this book and felt so let down when I was finished. I thought the depiction of slavery was not believable. I feel this book is an insult to the people who lived and died through slavery. The author had a real opportunity to give enligtenment to this subject and didn't come close. I would strongly not recommend it.
I thought I was going to love this book, especially with all the great reviews it has received. My final feeling is mixed. I very much liked the main character plus it had a good story line. The narrator was good. But even with all these good points, it just didn't live up to my expectations. My primary disappointment was that even with all these positives the book was boring.
Both the beginning and the end were great, but I slugged through the middle. I know this is a very mixed review. My bottom line is that I would give it an A for the begining and end and a D for the middle. Maybe I need to listen to it again, but I don't want to spend more time with it.
