There are shelves of memoirs about overcoming the death of a parent, childhood abuse, rape, drug addiction, miscarriage, alcoholism, hustling, gangbanging, near-death injuries, drug dealing, prostitution, or homelessness. Cupcake Brown survived all these things before she'd even turned 20.

Would you try another book from Cupcake Brown and/or Bahni Turpin?

I love Bahni and look for books narrated by her

If you’ve listened to books by Cupcake Brown before, how does this one compare?

    n/a

    Any additional comments?

This was really just ok for me. Started out really interesting, but towards the middle became monotonous, and I struggled to finish. Bahni Turpin as always gave a wonderful performance and I am pretty sure what kept me from just hanging up halfway through. I do respect the author, and feel for what she went through- but there is no mention of what she did FOR others once she overcame her difficulties. THAT would have been more extraordinary for me to hear.

Laugh-out-loud funny and deeply touching, Beth Hoffman's sparkling debut is, as Kristin Hannah says, "packed full of Southern charm, strong women, wacky humor, and good old-fashioned heart." It is a novel that explores the indomitable strengths of female friendship and gives us the story of a young girl who loses one mother and finds many others.

The performance was great, but the story is lacking in depth for me. I had difficulty going back to it with each time I had to pause the listen for an extended period of time. if you are looking for a light sugar sweet story to entertain then this is a good choice.

  • The Book Thief

It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

What a perfect pairing! I absolutely fell in love. The writing style is magical and hearing the words through Mr. Corduner's interpretation for tone was pure perfection. I fell completely in love with the characters and they are still with me as I write this. I want to point out that I didn't know this was considered young adult, and honestly glad I didn't as I might not have picked it. In my very humble opinion it is a wonderful story for any age. Should be a must read for any and all as Mr. Zusak's use of the English Language is as I said magical, like a beautiful dance.

Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?

Where does Sycamore Row rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

In my top 5 so far

What was one of the most memorable moments of Sycamore Row?

The characters will stay with me for some time. I don't have one particular moment.

Have you listened to any of Michael Beck’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but he was very good! Great pace, wonderful voice!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I could have I'm sure I would have.

    Any additional comments?

I had forgotten how much I enjoyed John Grisham. This was a wonderful story ..though yes slightly predictable as to where the story is going, it's told so well that you don't mind. I did tear up at bit towards the end even though I knew what was coming. It is a fictional work, but even so - it's close enough to humankind's actual history that it hurts to remember and be faced with what we are capable of doing to one another.

What did you love best about Declare?

    Author's interpretation.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hale. Main Character. His Realism and Acceptance of his lot in life.

What about Simon Prebble’s performance did you like?

Mr. Prebble has a way of interpreting the story as if he is simply relating his own experiences.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Truths about Soviets?

  • 11-22-63: A Novel

On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

Would you listen to 11-22-63 again? Why?

I had given up on Stephen King after Cellular. Craig Wasson is what kept me in this book. I would definitely listen again.

What did you like best about this story?

As always, the way Stephen King develops his characters is the best aspect of the story.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I enjoyed all the scenes in Al's Diner. I can still hear him talking.

    Any additional comments?

I was almost unable to hit pause. I felt I had to listen.
