Not at all what I expected and highly pleased with that. Pirsig takes me on a journey across the US on his motorcycle with his son discussing philosophy and finding and discussing the Angst of life and in the meantime revealing how mental illness can figure into the thread of existance in someone who understands the nature of Logic, Rhetoric, and Dialectic Arguments. What a tremendous read. Certainly a cultural classic and a must for any student of Aristotle or really anyone wishing to understand the origins of our philosophical being.
Bill Bryson is my personal hero. His writing style is fluid, his eloquence is music, and his compositions are remarkable. This book takes us through all the stages of each room of our house and what each room means and how it evolved into what it is today. Amazing information inside this tome includes the Crystal Palace, Frederick Olmstead Law, the evolution of our modern Toilet and Kitchen, and many more interesting facts and factoids that are priceless. I would recommend this to any history student over the more staid and boring rote memorization of dates of things as that are typically useless anyway. One of my favorite reads. Thats why there are 5 stars!!!!
Joan Didion is a wonderful writer and thinker. Her angst with dealing with the sudden loss of her soul-mate is an amazing insight into the thinking of such a creative soul. How strange to think we would need to subconsciously perhaps need to keep the shoes of our passed loved ones thinking they will return one day and need them. A truly remarkable expose' into the mind of a person progressing through the stages of grief and finally arriving at acceptance. I REALLY recommend this for anyone who must or has dealt with loss.
McCracken elaborates her angst and disbelief concerning the stillborn loss of her child and her reconciling how emotionally attached she was to the fetus during development and the disengagement she had to endure to separate herself from the dead child. I thought she took a brave road in allowing insight into her emotional state during this transition. Whereas this is not a re-read for me, I thought it was insightful and meaningful for the emotional states we need to endure during such passages. I would recommend it.
