This book was very well read by Dennis Boutsikaris. As I have worked to help eradicate polio in India, the story brought home to me the devastation that a preventable disease can bring to a community. I know many survivors of Polio, who now in their declining years are suffering from the effects of the painful and crippling disease.
I read the book many years ago and as soon as Audible provided it, I bought it. It is an amazing story and I would highly recommend it to listeners. It is well read. I also recommend all the other books by Nevil Shute.
I am only halfway through this book. It is a wonderful book full of lifestyles on the early 19th century - quite a history lesson at the same time as being a fascinating account of a brutal murder.
This is a good book to listen to while travelling - I always enjoy Jeffrey Archer's stories.
I am hooked on all Alexander McCall Smith's books. First I read 44 Scotland Street and now I am on the last book of Corduroy Mansions. I love all his eclectic characters with their faults and virtues. He really understands humans and dogs. I also read No 1 Ladies Detective Agency - but only one so far. I can't wait for my morning walk with the dog to listen to the next hour's worth! Simon Prebble is a great reader - a voice for each character.
I am in the last quarter of this book. I listen to books while walking the dog for about an hour each day. I have always enjoyed Marina Lewycka's books. The story jumps from one character to another and often back into the past when the characters were young. She is as funny an ever and sometimes people must wonder why I am laughing as I walk! Some books I can't wait to hear what happens next - but not with this book - it is what I call leisurely listening (reading). The narrator is excellent.
It took me a while to get into the first book because of all the characters, but once they were established as 'real characters', I loved the stories. I then listened to the next book and am now listening to 'Love Over Scotland'. It is essential to read the books in order. They are beautifully written and the narrator is excellent.
When I reached chapter 5 I decided that I had better things to do than listen to this drivel. The author needs to learn how to write and the narrator needs to take elocution lessons - she has a whining teenager voice. I should have read the reviews before purchasing this book - what a waste of a credit. Somebody insisted I read the book!
Took a while for me to get into the story but it was a good mystery and had a perfect ending! I bought the book because of Michael Kitchen - he is a superb narrator. I have purchased the next in the series.
I agree with the first review. Nevil Shute has always been my favourite author - I just wish there were more of his books on audio, as I have difficulty reading nowadays. I did find the Morris/Helen romance had a perfect ending - quite obvious!
