General David Petraeus is the most transformative leader the American military has seen since the generation of Marshall. In All In, military expert Paul Broadwell examines Petraeus's career, his intellectual development as a military officer, and his impact on the U.S. military.

Be prepared to take your medicine. I liked the book when it stuck to Gen. Patraeus. I felt it was way too political and Pro-Obama/Anti-Republican. It is not very objective in this regard. James Lurie did a very good job reading the book though.

This is a sweeping narrative history of the events leading to 9/11, a groundbreaking look at the people and ideas, the terrorist plans, and the Western intelligence failures that culminated in the assault on America. Lawrence Wright's remarkable book is based on five years of research and hundreds of interviews that he conducted in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sudan, England, France, Germany, Spain, and the United States.

This book is an excellent and thorough history of the roots of Al Qaeda. An exploration of the roots of evil starting in the 1940's. It gives great insight into the Islamist movement. Though it is lengthy, it is so interesting that it reads quite quickly.

Brett Battles does it again with this great new series. It's definitely different from the Jonathan Quinn series (which you should read too), but Logan Harper is an equally thrilling, complex, and interesting character. And also once again, Battles takes us on a thrilling ride across the globe --- all to save a girl. I could not recommend this any more!

A guttersnipe who has risen through the ranks of the British army, Ensign Sharpe is sailing home to England from his latest campaign against Napoleon. Anticipating an uneventful voyage, the dashing young maverick discovers the intriguing and very married Lady Grace Hale on board the Calliope. But just as he wins his way into her heart, the ship is fired upon and, suddenly, he finds himself in the thick of one of history's most spectacular incidents: the Battle of Trafalgar.

I really enjoy the Sharpe books, don't get me wrong. But I had to go back and read this one in print. The narration for me was totally unintelligible.

  • Grant and Sherman: The Friendship That Won the Civil War

"We were as brothers," William Tecumseh Sherman said, describing his relationship with Ulysses S. Grant. They were incontestably two of the most important figures in the Civil War, but until now there has been no book about their victorious partnership and the deep friendship that made it possible.

This book is clearly written and incisive with lots of great historical details. Flood really brings out the friendship between Sherman and Grant. He is also a surprisingly great narrator. I highly recommend this book.
