At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

I was a bit standoffish of this book because of the mixed reviews, some said it was wonderful while others wished it had more of the hiking journey rather than the side stories. I broke down and bought it anyways. Cheryl and I are of the same age and have been through several of the same struggles so I instantly connected with her, I don't believe there was too much back story and not enough hiking as a lot of people have said. I think it was a perfect balance, I mean if you are walking through the woods by yourself with no one to talk to of course you are going to think about moments in your life its only natural. It was a very uplifting book for me, made me want to go and do this journey myself. Amazing, captivating, attention grabbing. Didn't want this one to end, and when it did I caught a few tears pouring out of me as I didn't want it to be over yet. Great read, I recommend to anyone outdoorsy or not.
