Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife. She may go out once a day to markets whose signs are now pictures because women are not allowed to read. She must pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, for in a time of declining birthrates her value lies in her fertility, and failure means exile to the dangerously polluted Colonies. Offred can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name....

When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity.

Cloning, feel-good drugs, anti-aging programs, and total social control through politics, programming, and media: has Aldous Huxley accurately predicted our future? With a storyteller's genius, he weaves these ethical controversies in a compelling narrative that dawns in the year 632 A.F. (After Ford, the deity). When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity.

Would you listen to Brave New World again? Why?

Yes because I feel it serves such a strong warning against allowing the government to rule and regulate that which is inherently flawed and as a result, beautiful and perfectly created. When the government oversteps nature, a chain reaction ensues.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Brave New World?

The detail the author provides leaves the reader which powerful imagery and leaves very little to the imagination in the sense the reader does not have to supplement with what might be false or misguided images. For example, when describing the hatchery, the author is certain to mention in detail the process and in essence sets up a great foundation for the reader to better understand the actions of those that stemmed from the hatchery.

Have you listened to any of Michael York’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not but I had always "heard" this book in American English and it was brilliant to hear it in its native tongue if you will as the story is centered in London.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The narrator was very vivacious, animated and energetic. Some of the most touching moments included the dynamic of John and "Linder" or Linda.

    Any additional comments?

I highly recommend this to everyone. This book is a good "starting point" for those getting into current affairs. This is a true foreshadow of events that have occurred that the author hit on years prior but a closer look reveals that "Big Brother" and conditioning are amongst us. To have free thought is to be a strong reader and this supports such. Happy reading!

After a sad and neglected childhood as an orphan, Jane Eyre was hired by Edward Rochester as governess for his ward. Jane was pleased with the quiet country life at Thornfield, with the beautiful old manor house and gardens, with the book-filled library, and with her own comfortable room. But there were stories of a strange tenant, a woman who laughed like a maniac, and who stayed in rooms on the third floor.

Would you listen to Jane Eyre [Brilliance Edition] again? Why?

Yes!! Although it is slow to "read" at times, it was a delightful listen!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Jane Eyre [Brilliance Edition]?

Honestly, Ms. Ericksen's performance. I don't think I ever could have imagined the characters as vividly as she portrayed them. That was a delight!

What does Susan Ericksen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The characters come to life. She spoke with an English accent, of course but her Irish characters were impressive!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No just because it was slow-moving at times but it was a delightful listen!

    Any additional comments?

I would consider this a must "read!"

In a pulls-no-punches essay intended to provoke rational discussion, Stephen King sets down his thoughts about gun violence in America. Anger and grief in the wake of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School are palpable in this urgent piece of writing, but no less remarkable are King's keen thoughtfulness and composure as he explores the contours of the gun-control issue and constructs his argument for what can and should be done.

    What disappointed you about Guns?

Stephen King is imaginative but he babbled on about gun control in an illogical manner.

Has Guns turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No.

What aspect of Christian Rummel’s performance would you have changed?

I think Christian Rummel was set up for failure having to narrate this dribble. Mr. Rummel added fiery disdain that was enjoyable but the 'script' doomed his performance. I would read something else he narrated.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No. The narration was good...Mr. Rummel could read a gothic novel or thriller and be amazing. I think Mr. King should have had his "editorial" reviewed prior to publishing. It was not organized and fluid and more of a soap box forum that a critic of gun control and legislation.
