"Would have been a better read"
I don't think the style of the book nor the narration leant itself to an audio version. The story itself was ok, but listening to it really ruined it for me. the narrator was boring and the style of announcing who was speaking during examination of the witness was very annoying. I could recommend it to someone who would want to read it and would be interested in their take on the book.
"Good ride through a few more European cities"
I enjoyed this book. Easy to listen to and I really enjoy the tour guide through famous cities. I felt it was very similar to the DaVinci Code in style. Take the DaVinci Code, plop it into a different city with a different book other than the bible and you have this book. So it follows the same formula. However, it is highly enjoyable and a fast ride. I can see tour guides in a few more cities setting up tours based on this book!
Narration was great...will probably listen to this again with the hubby on a road trip.
"A really good story"
I have been an audible member for about a year and a half. My husband likes to listen to books but only during road trips. I picked this one because I thought it would appeal to both us since he is a diver and I enjoy books that have a history element.
This book did not dissapoint. It is an interesting story that always kept us engaged. My husband loved it. He could really appreciate all of the diving parts and would explain some things that I didn't understand so that I could appreciate it more also (even though you don't have to know anything about diving to enjoy the book) I have read some fiction books that mention Uboats off the East coast, but really didn't know much about it. This book makes me want to find more nonfiction books to learn more.
Since I have made listening the way that I "read" books now, I have really honed in on good writers and good narrators and I am sure that my husband would say that I have high expectations, however, I thought both the narrator and the writer were just ok. The narrator didn't detract from the book, but neither did he enhance the experience. The writing was just ok also. There were a lot of times throughout the book where I felt there were too many descriptive words added. My sense was that the author felt he had a really good story here, but would add a lot of stuff to it so that it would be long enough for a book.
Overall, it was a good road trip book.
"A well written book"
Although the author uses a lot of foreshadowing and imagery techniques throughout the novel, it is the story and narration that make it an outstanding book for me. The narrator's voice for Owen Meany is annoying at times, but it is essential to the story.
The book grabbed me from the start and it was very hard to put down. I had never listened to or read a John Irving novel, but I have now added more to my wish list.
"Freedom to or Freedom from..."
That is one of the most thought provoking parts of the novel for me. When people throw the word freedom around, which is it in their mind?, freedom to or freedom from. For this to be written in the late 80's and be so scary today is amazing. I think this is a great book club book and can't wait to talk to others about it.
The narration was outstanding. Again this is a book that I am so glad to have listened to. It added so much more to the story.
This was the last of all the nominees that I listened to for best fiction for the Audies. In my mind it should be the winner!!
"Probably a great book for a sci-fi fan"
One thing that I have loved about listening to books on audible, is that I have become more adventurous in my "reading" choices. I have tried a lot more books outside of my comfort zone. Normally, I would not try a sci-fi book, but I tried this book because of all of the fantastic reviews and that fact that it is a Audie nominee. I thoroughly enjoyed the narrator and for about 3/4 of the book, I was really enjoying the storyline. Then it became major sci fi and It just ruined it for me---it was just too weird. I almost didn't finish it, but decided just to speed it up.
So my advice is that if you like sci-fi you will probably enjoy it. If you don't, you won't.
"Interesting...different than I thought it would be"
Based on the summary, I thought most of the story would be centered on Josef, however, it was more about Sage's grandmother, , a victim and survivor of the Holocaust. I think I was looking forward to a more in depth exploration of a SS officer during and after the war, and that is the reason why I haven't given this a 5. Having said this, it is a very good story with good narration. I really liked "My Sister's Keeper" and did not like at all "Lone Wolf", so Jodi Picoult books for me can be hit or miss. I guessed most of the ending, however, the book has made me think about the characters and what I liked and did not like about some of them, well after finishing the book. I would recommend this book to others.
"Really enjoyed this"
The dialogue.
Gus
Yes.
This book made me laugh and cry. The narration was perfect, both the pace and the believability of someone on oxygen trying to speak at the times when she really couldn't get enough air.
"Expectations can sometimes ruin a book"
I was really expecting the book to be mostly about the Chef's tongue cancer and how he could be a chef while losing his sense of taste. However, the first ten hours of the book all had to do with his life as a chef and the opening of his resaurant. Since I felt like I was never getting to the story I wanted to hear, I was disappointed in the book.
Both of their very elevated egos are obvious in the book. I couldn't help wondering what the people who worked for them thought of them.
I've listened to many books and I felt like his performance was whiny. It didn't add anything to the story and was somewhat irritating.
"Entertaining"
Yes, it was fast moving and entertaining. It is purely a fiction book that was easy to listen to. I didn't have to think too hard.
Yes, if I know that they like this type of book
Yes, into a movie, similar to National Treasure.
