All it takes is a few underhanded moves by a tough ex-cop named Eppick to pull thief John Dortmunder into a game he never wanted to play. With no choice, he sets out on a perilous treasure hunt for a long-lost gold and jewel-studded chess set once intended as a birthday gift for the last Romanov czar. Success is not inevitable with Dortmunder leading the attack, but he's nothing if not persistent, and some gambit or other might just stumble into a winning move.

Dufris and Westlake - what a pair.

The story is already clever and hilarious, and Dufris' narration ensures it remains as such. The characters are all so clearly defined by a vocal maestro.

I was sorry it ended far too soon.

Eluding the law has always been high on Dortmunder's list. But getting caught red-handed is inevitable in his next caper, when a TV producer convinces this thief and his merry gang to star in a reality show that captures their next score. The producer even guarantees to keep the show from being used as evidence against them. They're dubious at first, but the pay's good, so they sign on.

I howled out loud a number of times, chuckled constantly throughout, and even giggled and snorted. Dufris did a fantastic job - his characters were out of this world... literally! And the production values were top-notch.

    When's the sequel???

Fleeing the respectable society that wants to "sivilize" him, Huck Finn shoves off with Jim on a rhapsodic raft journey down the Mississippi River. The two bind themselves to one another, becoming intimate friends and agreeing "there warn't no home like a raft, after all. Other places do seem so cramped up and smothery, but a raft don't. You feel mighty free and easy and comfortable on a raft".

What a tour de force! I am on my SECOND listening to this marvelous rendition of an American classic. Dufris is a wonder. One could almost swear that this a multi-voiced production. From the exuberant and generous-spirited Huck to the noble and wise Jim to that dastardly and incorrigible duo, the duke and the dauphin, a world of colorful and entertaining characters is created by a most gifted narrator.

Five deranged CIA killers, all of them dependent on their meds and deep in the woods of Maine, are forced to break out of the asylum when someone murders their psychiatrist and frames them for the deed. Crazy and traumatized by their experiences in the CIA, they operate under somewhat skewed perceptions of reality. Their training, however, has prepared them to survive in an unfriendly world, even if that world is the Boston-to-Washington corridor as they chase down the real killer.

The reviewer who described the reader as that of a wannabe stand-up comic narrating, is akin to accepting Eddie Murphy as an undertaker! This was a brilliantly-narrated production. A few times, I actually teared up while listening. The book is humorous, poignant, exciting and downright entertaining. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars, as it will surely be listened to again. Bravo!

They're baaaaaaaaaaaaacckkkkk!!! Rocky Coast Radio Theatre returns with yet another copious cornucopia of classic concoctions, crafted and compiled for the captive congregation (gotta love that thesaurus!). Nightmares on Congress Street, Part V offers dramatized adaptations (complete with music and sound effects) of chilling stories penned by Edgar Allan Poe, Hugh B. Cave, and H.P. Lovecraft, as well as a few additional treats.

I wrote a rave review for Part IV, and it was that purchase that prompted me to get Part V. I am so glad I did. It was even better! There's one somewhat weak adaptation of a Poe piece (Tell-Tale Heart). It works, but... ennnnhhhh. Retroactive Terror is a biting satirical piece, which would make many a conservative pale. Ray Bradbury's short story, The Wind, is an amazing tribute to his writing prowess. The Door Below is deliciously creepy, and HP Lovecraft's Testimony Of Randolph Carter is the scariest and most atmospheric audio theatre I have ever heard. And I've listened to a lot! I can hardly wait for Part VI!!! In the meantime, I'll just relisten to IV & V.

Nightmares on Congress Street is a chilling compilation of classic and original tales presented in audio theatre format, complete with music and sound effects. Pieces include the well-known "The Monkey's Paw" and "The Cask of Amontillado", as well as those penned specially for this production, such as "The Cabin in the Woods" by Clay Graybeal and "The Horror of Walker Point" by Anthony Marino.

    Overall

I listen to a lot of audio drama, but I've seldom heard a compilation production as professional and engaging as this was. Acting, music, sfx and choice of material was amazing. Pieces ranged from chilling to hilarious to tongue-in-cheek to downright spooky. The Monkey's Paw brings back the goosebumps I felt when reading it in high school, while Cask Of Amontillado would make Poe proud. Cabin In The Woods is just... brilliant, and Horror Of Walker Point is virtually a modern "War Of The Worlds-type" piece, being a "live" performance. HA! I've already purchased Nightmares Pt V on the strength of this one, and loved it even more. If you like audio drama, you'll love this.

Richard K. Morgan has received widespread praise for his astounding 25th-century novels featuring Takeshi Kovacs, and has established a growing legion of fans. Mixing classic noir sensibilities with a searing futuristic vision of an age when death is nearly meaningless, Morgan returns to his saga of betrayal, mystery, and revenge, as Takeshi Kovacs, in one fatal moment, joins forces with a mysterious woman who may have the power to shatter Harlan's World forever.

I LOVED THIS BOOK! The story was intelligent and gripping, and the narrator was exceptional. He literally breathed life into the characters in a way that I have seldom heard elsewhere. I was fine with the 'echoey' quality to the recording at various points, as those short sections were obviously altered to reflect either a past episode, or to simulate telecommunications. The overall production value was also superb. Can't wait for the next one!
